Hi, I'm Juliana (she/her), a Latinex farmer originally from Northeastern Brazil and currently residing on the traditional land of the Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫʼ in Trumansburg, NY. My passion lies in connecting people with farming and the environment, and since 2009, I've been involved in educational programs focusing on farm justice in Recife, Brazil, and New York. In 2021, I began my own farming journey with Viva Acres, where I raise sheep, produce wool and lamb cuts, offer farm education programs, and create herbal products.
Now, I'm reaching out through this campaign to seek support in purchasing land to further expand my operations.
Viva Acres isn't just a farm; it's a manifestation of my commitment to principles that honor the lives of animals and foster a deeper connection with the land. My shepherding practices involve treating animals as more than mere commodities, incorporating tree fodder into their diets and developing an integrated management system with rotational grazing and tree crops. For me, farming is about community, collaboration, and cooperation, and I've been actively collaborating with local farmers, shepherdesses, and contributing to initiatives like Local Fiber NY, aimed at rebuilding a sustainable regional fiber and textile economy.
Starting a farm business from scratch comes with its financial challenges, especially without family inheritance. I began this farm project taking loans for purchasing the sheep, tiny house, and temporary infrastructure while leasing farmland. For a farm business to grow, you need proper infrastructure, and it is challenging to invest in infrastructure on leased land. I now have an opportunity to acquire my own farmland!
This campaign is not just about supporting me; it's about supporting a vision of regenerative farming, inspiring new farmers, and addressing inequalities within the food system. I believe in the transformative power of community, and your financial support will play a crucial role in propelling Viva Acres from leasing farmland to establishing long-term land tenure.
Your contributions will specifically aid in a
- $6,500 farmland down payment,
- $3,000 for moving costs of the tiny house and the farm animals, and
- $500 for campaign expenses
The new farmland, with its five acres and existing infrastructure, holds great potential to amplify Viva Acres' mission, fostering environmental benefits and promoting collective healing and liberation. Join me on this journey to create a sustainable and community-focused farm that not only produces quality products but also contributes to positive environmental impact and social change.
