I need healthcare.
As a black trans man dealing with a lot of mental health problems, this pandemic coupled with heightened awareness of anti-black violence in our society has hit hard. I can’t afford to wait any longer for essential healthcare without seriously putting my life at risk.
The NHS has failed to give me appropriate care throughout my life. I’ve been put in solitary confinement in a psychiatric hospital for telling a nurse my pronouns (“paranoid delusions about gender”). I’ve been misdiagnosed more times than I can count. I’ve been given ridiculously little information in primary care about the medications I was being prescribed. For example, I’ve been prescribed sertraline, and given absolutely no information about how it interacts with mania, which my GP knows is a big part of my illness. And we all know how many years it takes to get anywhere with the NHS gender identity clinics.
There are nearly no specialists I’ve been able to see on the NHS that can advise me specifically about bipolarity and transition.
In psychiatric hospitals up and down the country, they are currently having 2 bed meetings a day to see who they can remove from the wards due to high demands. The private sector has given them beds, but there is still no room. In ordinary circumstances I would have gone into psychiatric hospital, but that is literally not an option.
tl;dr being black and trans makes staying alive on the NHS really hard.
At this point, with the lockdown and a lifetime of trauma, I just really need to get the ball rolling.
I need money to see a private psychiatrist who understands trans issues. I need to see a private gender clinic to be able to safely transition.
My black life matters. My black trans life matters. Please help me.
