Vision Restoration for Athena's Future
Donation protected
I’m raising funds for a crucial eye procedure that could help return the vision in my left eye—and with it, my independence and quality of life.
I’ve battled rheumatoid arthritis since I was just three years old. Unfortunately, the disease spread to my eyes, triggering a rare autoimmune condition found in children that led to cataracts caused by long-term medication use. Because my eye pressure wasn’t properly monitored, I developed glaucoma and tragically lost all vision in my left eye in May 2024. Losing sight in one eye was devastating, and for a long time, I believed I had lost all hope of seeing fully again.
But now, there is a new possibility.
I’ve been put on a wait list for a pre-approval access treatment called rtACS (repetitive transorbital alternating current stimulation) at Wills Eye Hospital, one of the most respected and renowned eye hospitals in the country. This innovative therapy is designed to stimulate visual pathways in the brain and potentially restore some visual function. Unlike a traditional clinical trial, this treatment is offered under a special access program—which means it’s not covered by insurance, and I must pay $5,000 out-of-pocket to participate.
The program is set to begin in early July, and in addition to the procedure itself, I also need to cover travel and lodging costs to get to the hospital.
I’m doing everything I can to protect the vision I have left. Along with the possibility of gaining my vision back . This treatment offers hope—something I haven’t felt in a long time. Any contribution, no matter how small, will bring me one step closer to this life-changing opportunity.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your kindness, support, and generosity.
With love and gratitude,
Athena
