Vision Academy in Yo-yo, Uganda - Fundraising

Liebe alle,

seit Jahren schon sammeln wir - Maria und Cyrus - Spenden für die Vision Academy in Yo-Yo in Uganda. Cyrus hat vor vielen Jahren, gemeinsam mit seinem Onkel, diese Schule (Grundschule und Sekundarstufe 1) selbst gegründet, auf dem von seinen Eltern geerbten Land. Die Gegend ist strukturarm, hier gibt es wenig Schulen, der Weg zu diesen ist weit und die meisten Familien können sich die Schulgelder nicht leisten. Außerdem sind viele Kinder in der Gegend Waisen oder Halbwaisen und wachsen bei Onkel und Tante auf. Wenn in solch einer Familie das Geld knapp ist, werden in vielen Fällen die "eigenen" Kinder bevorzugt und die "anderen" Kinder müssen auf dem Feld mitarbeiten, anstatt eine kostspielige Schulbildung zu erhalten. Also haben Cyrus und Onkel Jeremiah eine Schule gegründet, die keine Schulgebühren kostet, eine Schule für alle.

Keine Schulgebühren als Schule zu verlangen, heißt aber auch, ohne Budget einen Betrieb erhalten zu müssen: Es gibt kein Geld für den Bau von Schulgebäuden, es gibt kein Geld für die Bezahlung der Lehrkräfte, es gibt noch nicht mal Geld für den morgendlichen Porridge, damit die Kinder nicht mit leerem Magen im Unterricht sitzen.

So sind die ersten Schulgebäude dadurch entstanden, dass die Dorfgemeinschaft selbst Backsteine gebacken hat und aus diesen die ersten zwei Klassenzimmer gebaut hat. Später haben wir angefangen, regelmäßig Spenden zu sammeln, haben weitere und größere Gebäude und Sanitäranlagen gebaut, haben Bücher und Schulmaterialien und Lebensmittel gekauft, haben Obstbäume gepflanzt und die Dorfgemeinschaft hat ein großes Feld angelegt und erntet nun hier verschiedene Formen von Gemüse für das tägliche Essen der Schulkinder.

Die von uns gepflanzten Mango-, Guave- und Avocadobäume sind inzwischen so groß geworden, dass sie viele Früchte tragen, die die Kinder gerne essen, die aber auch verkauft werden können, um damit z.B. neue Bücher anzuschaffen.

Letztes Jahr haben wir uns dann ausführlich mit der Frage der Nachhaltigkeit der Schule beschäftigt. Denn obwohl wir immer wieder einen großen Teil der Spendengelder für die Bezahlung der Lehrkräfte genutzt haben, war das Geld natürlich nach einer Weile wieder aufgebraucht und dann standen wir erneut vor der Frage, wie man die Lehrkräfte in den kommenden Monaten bezahlen kann. Zunächst haben wir geringe Schulgebühren eingeführt - jedoch unter der Prämisse, dass wir Kinder, die die Gebühren trotz der geringen Summe nicht bezahlen können, nicht wegschicken und ihnen die Bildung verwehren. Entsprechend ist die Summe, die durch die Schulgebühren reinkommt, nach wie vor nicht hoch.

Also haben wir weiter nachgedacht und irgendwann hatten Onkel Jeremiah, Cyrus und die Lehrkräfte folgende Idee: Die ugandische Hauptspeise ist "Posho", eine Art Maispolenta. Den Mais pflanzen die meisten Familien in ihren kleinen Gärten an, jedoch muss dieser gemahlen werden und dazu bringen die Dorfbewohner den Mais zu einer Mühle. In dem Dorf Yo-Yo gibt es jedoch nur eine Mühle. Warum nun also nicht eine weitere Mühle aufmachen und mit dem Mühlbetrieb Geld erwirtschaften, welches dann wiederum für das monatliche Gehalt der Lehrkräfte der Vision Academy genutzt wird?

Und darum ist unser diesjähriges Spendenziel, dass wir gerne wieder 5000 Euro zusammenbekommen würden, um damit einen Mühlbetrieb aufmachen zu können, um die Bezahlung der Lehrkräfte von Spendengeldern zu entkoppeln.

For years now we - Maria and Cyrus - have been collecting donations for the Vision Academy in Yo-Yo in Uganda. Many years ago, Cyrus and his uncle founded this school (primary and secondary level 1) themselves on the land inherited from his parents. The area is structurally poor, there are few schools here, the distance to them is long and most families cannot afford the school fees. In addition, many children in the area are orphans or half-orphans and grow up with uncles and aunts. When money is tight in such a family, in many cases the “own” children are favored and the “other” children have to work in the fields instead of receiving an expensive school education. So Cyrus and Uncle Jeremiah founded a school that does not charge school fees, a school for everyone.

But not charging school fees as a school also means having to maintain a business without a budget: There is no money to build school buildings, there is no money to pay the teachers, there is not even money to buy porridge in the morning so that the children don't sit in class on an empty stomach.

The first school buildings were built when the village community baked bricks themselves and used them to build the first two classrooms. Later, we started collecting donations on a regular basis, built more and larger buildings and sanitary facilities, bought books and school materials and food, planted fruit trees and the village community planted a large field and now harvests various types of vegetables for the school children's daily meals.

The mango, guava and avocado trees we planted have now grown so large that they bear lots of fruit, which the children enjoy eating, but which can also be sold to buy new books, for example.

Last year, we looked in detail at the issue of sustainability at the school. Although we repeatedly used a large proportion of the donations to pay the teachers, the money was of course used up again after a while and then we were once again faced with the question of how to pay the teachers in the coming months. Initially, we introduced low school fees - but on the premise that we would not send away children who could not pay the fees despite the low amount and deny them an education. As a result, the amount that comes in through school fees is still not high.

So we kept thinking and at some point Uncle Jeremiah, Cyrus and the teachers came up with the following idea: the Ugandan main dish is “posho”, a kind of maize polenta. Most families grow the maize in their small gardens, but it has to be ground and the villagers take the maize to a mill. However, there is only one mill in the village of Yo-Yo. So why not open another mill and generate money with the milling operation, which in turn is used to pay the monthly salary of the Vision Academy teachers?

And that's why our donation target this year is that we would like to raise another 5000 euros to open a mill so that we can decouple the teachers' salaries from donations.
