I am one of the few places left that restores, custom modifies and repairs vintage audio equipment at reasonable cost.
On November 8, 2018, the Paradise CA Camp Fire took it all away - Decades to build - All burned down to the ground within hours! Lost - No insurance. - My refurbished equipment, parts, tools and test equipment - and pretty much all else I ever owned: All was gone! - Now more than a year later re-established my work and am fully working again, but I still need funds. Help me to keep YOUR vintage audio equipment alive and well!
Since more than 40 years I service and refurbish and custom modify: record changers, reel to reel + cassette decks, vintage receivers/amplifiers, vintage electronic music equipment + much more - all audio equipment manufactured from the late 40's to late 80's ...
My vintage audio web site is:
ultraelectronicactive.com
The remains of my facility after the "Camp Fire":
It was a 3 room house plus a large garage
Now more than a year after the fire (DEC 2019): We for now live in Chico and I have essential tools and parts to fully work again, and even have some refurbished vintage audio equipment back in stock, but am still in need of some test equipment, parts and tools. The "Camp Fire" devastation left me with these items still needed:
Funds to re-purchase lost tools, test equipment and parts (Function Generator, Distortion meter, FM1000A FM alignment generator, tube tester, Open reel test tapes, cassette test tapes and gauges, and more)
Funds to re-purchase vintage equipment that I refurbish
Funds to purchase hard to find vintage parts, so that I can have them in stock again.
Funds to finally take a vacation - after a crazy year of seeming endless resurecting work without much of a break.
If you know of a repair shop who retired and is selling out tools and parts please let me know.
What happened on Thursday November 8 (My experience in the fire):
I decided to stay inside a little longer to plan my day in my head until about 8 AM. When I got up to go outside I realized that the light coming from the outside looked really weird. So I decided to go out to the porch to have a look. The light found there, really looked strange: where well light green. The sun light yellow orange, dark gray shadows where the - what I thought to be "dark clouds" seem to cover - dark gray in light. A picture of high unnatural seeming contrasts. It looked so weird, that I decided to get the camera and take a photo. After the photo was taken I realized that the "seeming clouds" actually was smoke. Immedeatly I went into the house to google if anything was known about the fire, but I was unable to find anything. So I went back to the porch and had a closer look. I realized that the wind was pushing the smoke or fire directly towards Paradise or the house. I examined a little longer to get an idea how intense the fire would be or how long it would take to get here. I did only come to the conclusion that there might be danger. So I went back to my computer to see if I could find anything possibly even the phone number of the fire department to get more information. By then I found that the camp fire was listed and declared as a threat to east of Pentz road. I realized there was not much time to loose, but to prepare to leave as soon as possible. I knew I had only time to get the most important things. I called my wife (I was at my business - she at the house) who seemed to already know about the fire and who was quite concerned about the danger of it. So: I pulled a few expensive items (including a record changer that was promised to a customer), all papers that I could find, one set of spare clothes to and packed all in the car. My cat seemed nervous possibly on the run, so I had to take her into the house. There I realized that I had not eaten any breakfast yet so I devoured a left over cookie and drank quickly a can of lemon soda. By the time I had finished my wife drove up and said that the neighborhood of the house was on fire and she was leaving immedeatly for Chico for us to eventually meet up at "Tin Roof" bakery. As the cat was still in the house I packed some water and cat food and left with the cat a few minutes later. The time when I had fist discovered that the daylight had been "weird" until I actually left was less than one hour. When reaching the first traffic light (Wagstaff & Clark) I noticed that traffic was backed up. It took more than 10 minutes to get from the traffic light to get to the entrance of the K-Mart shopping mall - usually driven within a few seconds once the traffic light turns green. I realized that traffic was grid locked and that the fire was approaching quickly. The K-Mart parking lot was nearly empty. As I realized that if traffic was grid locked on the road, I feared that the fire would over take cars stuck in grid-locked traffic, so I decided to seek the "safety" of the open in the parking lot. The choice seemed between "burning to death" or risking to sufficate by getting "smoked out". As the choice seemed clear I decided to move towards the parking lot. It took me some time to get out of the moving traffic and onto the entrance of the parking lot. My car was one of the first ones there, so I decided to get located into the center of the lot, furthest away from any trees or structures, should they burst into flames. Shortly after I had parked the car a large needle tree behind "Save Mart" went up into flames - the fire seemingly coming from the neighborhood directly behind the shopping mall. First, all of the tree's branches flared up in a large fire flash burning up all of the needles. Confirmed: The fire was now officially "here". Smoke seemed to expand now all around the K-Mart shopping mall: The neighborhood of Wagstaff towards Pentz road were clearly on fire. Explosions filled the air frequently (probably exploding propane tanks) the fire seemed to move sporadically: igniting some areas randomly while seeming to leave other areas un-touched. Slowly the fire seemed to almost surround us burning down houses on Wagstaff road towards Sky way road in a relatively short time completely to the ground while leaving the bank building at the corner of Wagstaff and Clark road untouched. The fire seemed to expand uphill towards the neighbor hood where my shop was located and smoke seemed to densify form being able to see individual plumes to a grey - black smoke mass. By now the Parking lot had slowly filled up. While the fire seemed to have spread sporadic leaving areas untouched - with time the burning seemed to close in, burning what had previously been un-touched. In the parking lot some people got of their car and exchanged words. Apparently traffic had been stopped and was re-directed to the mall's parking lot. Young people (probably in the medical profession) handed out masks to ease breathing. I asked a man for a cell phone to call my wife that I was still in Paradise even though hours had passed. The spirit of fellow Paradisiens to help each other was truly heart warming. The smoke now covered all of the sky getting darker and darker until it seemed actually as dark as one would find at mid night even though It should have been bright day light. It seemed it was getting hard to breathe. Was this the end? I continued to pray and pray with all of my heart that Paradise would be enfolded in a protective circle of Christ-Light. The smoke eventually became lighter and day light returned. Hours and hours in the parking lot without food or water. Police cars were patrolling the entrances of the parking lot announcing that Clark road - the route to escape was still closed. Late afternoon - probably around 4 PM a series of Governmental trucks arrived delivering "Gatorade" free to the take for all of the of the "inhabitants" of the parking lot. Shortly there after the word got out that Clark road had been opened. Every one started to move and before long we finally were on our way to evacuate. The views along Clark road reminded of a "war zone". Most buildings completely in rubble - burned to the ground. Some neighborhoods seemed completely gone. Power lines down on the road. Some power line masts burned up at the bottom, dangling in mid air and the whole thing hanging from the power line that was still up. Familiar places completely gone, almost as they had never been there. The post office seemed still standing and unharmed - all else seemed gone. What I saw was truly bizarre all the way until I finally got to Chico.
I am glad to be alive and well, together with my wife and with our two cats - We are seeking to serving our community - With you help Hopefully better than ever before! God bless you! and THANK YOU!
