Vincent Ferranti (My Story)

Hello all,

My name is Vincent Ferranti, but many of you know me as Vinny. I started this “go fund me” page in an effort to ask for your assistance in buying a wheelchair for me. Ideally, I would like to purchase two chairs, one to keep at home and one to keep at work. I think this would be a tremendous benefit for me, so I don’t have to drag around one chair from work to home and vice-versa.

As many of you may already know, I have been diagnosed with a progressive degenerative disease known as SCA 2 (Spino-Cerebellar Ataxia Type 2). Basically, it effects the balance & coordination part of the cerebellum, rendering a person from using their legs & balancing skills properly, among other disabilities it inflicts. Sadly, things only go downhill as time passes by. Currently, there has been some research and testing, but no cure or medication has been found. Since Ataxia is not life threatening and very few people have it, not much progress has been made in the medical field, and only handicap devices are presented to better comfort a person in this situation.

If you have seen me when I first started working, I always was doing something and fast walking to somewhere. When I started my first year at TH, I was always running errands on the floors or carrying equipment up & down stairs. As the years passed and I got older, those events began to become distant memories that will never happen again. I feel very blessed & honored to have such caring people around me and to work in an environment where people are understanding of my challenges. As the days turned into months and months turned into years, I was confined to a single place, unless I had a wheelchair to borrow. My mobility was very limited as I felt I was tied to my desk and if I did decided to go out with my walker – the slightest bump or uneven surface, can throw me off balance. I think we can all agree that living/commuting in New York is not the most ideal place for a person with any kind of disability.

This brings me to my conclusion where I ask for any kind of help in purchasing a wheelchair(s). Quite frankly, a wheelchair can get pretty pricey due to modifications to fit your body type (customization's, measurements, height, etc….). If you have ever read any article about wheelchairs, for some reason, they must be custom built to fit your body. I have tried going the route of asking insurance, but unfortunately wheelchairs are expensive and insurance companies are very hesitant to cover anything over budget. I would greatly appreciate any donation you may give - and if you can’t, that is totally fine. I will still like to thank you for hearing me out and reading my story. Just try to share this page with any friends or family or even co-workers & colleagues.

Of course, if you have any questions or concerns- just shoot me an email.
