Vimal Gopal, son, brother and dear friend to so many, passed away Saturday, June 2nd in a tragic accident. We are devastated at his loss.

We are so thankful for the numerous emails, texts and messages from people asking how to help. To answer that question, we've created this memorial trust in Vimal's honor.

Vimal has had a profound impact on the lives of so many. His joy was infectious. His love endlessly reassuring. His zeal for life inspiring. His company comforting. His smile warming. His mischief exciting. His humor disarming.

To carry on Vimal's legacy of joy, love and a passion for life we have created this memorial trust. All funds collected will be donated to charity (to be selected at a later date) and to fight prevent beach-related deaths. We would also like to promote travel safety as a whole.  The first $5,000 donated will be matched by the Gopal family. But, please don't feel inhibited to contribute once we've reached the $5000 mark.  If we are going to make REAL change to make beach-related deaths a less common occurrence, we are going to need all the help we can get.  According to  the US Department of Commerce, National Travel and Tourism Office, Mexico is THE most common place American tourists die in world. In 2014 there were 355 drowning fatalities of just Americans reported.  That's nearly one American a day!  And we are not including drowning-related fatalities of people of other nationalities.  A single death is much too many, but the tourist industry as a whole does not publicize these statistics or put signs up on beaches warning tourists because it would affect their bottom dollar.

The post-mortem industry is also thriving in these areas of tourist deaths. They request payments of tens of thousands of dollars for costs related to ambulance, hospitals, autopsy (which is required) and body preservation. That’s right. In Vimal’s case, they did not ask for money in pesos, but US DOLLARS. Families are grieving and easy to take advantage of in these cases, so they just pay. WE NEED TO STOP THIS!

If you would like to donate, please click the donate button to offer whatever you would like. If you are unable to donate please do still leave messages and comments for Vimal and his friends and family.

Vimal's funeral will be held on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at Donaldson Funeral Home in Odenton, Maryland between 11:30am and 1:30pm.  Please visit https://www.donaldsonodenton.com/notices/Vimal-Gopal for further details.

Help us continue what Vimal already started. Instead of flowers, make a small donation that will help carry his legacy and make the world a better place through peace, love and happiness.
