For the first time in almost 50 years, hotel workers are taking industrial action for the real living wage, paid breaks, and an end to discriminatory pay practices for young workers. Our members at Village Hotel in Govan are asking to be paid equally without discriminatory and inexplicable pay differentials above the existing poverty wages they currently receive as well as paid breaks through their union, Unite Hospitality Glasgow.
Village Hotel and Club are a multi-million pound business owned by Blackstone Inc., yet have said that [they're] very comfortable with [their] pay structure and employment terms more generally, and at this stage [they] have no plans to pay all employees the real living wage or to provide paid breaks. [They] know that we are not alone in this approach which is one often adopted across the hospitality sector. They have an upcoming £82 million refurbishment programme and plans to massively expand over the next five years.
Hospitality workers have had enough of the impoverishing industry standards so often cited as the reason they cannot be paid at a reasonable rate. Instead, they are choosing to organise a workers' union against an industry that viciously attacks trade unionism for better conditions, dignity, and respect in the workplace.
This fund will be used to top up strike pay from Unite the Union to workers on the picket lines from the 2nd to the 31st of August 2025.
