How Can Life Changing Opportunity Impact on a Village Girl?
I am Bossan Abdyyeva
I need money for the second year of my college:
I need total: 9,223$ including my tuition, room and board and health insurance
My room and board - 3,345$ (covered by my job savings)
Insurance - 665$ (covered by job)
Tuition - 5,213$
Recieved Presidential scholarship in amount 1,500$ and I am saving money
3,000$ is left for graduating
Several years ago, I did not even think of getting higher education since my family members did not consider education seriously. Also, living in a village where everyone has a stereotype that girls should learn how to sew and be a tailor made me lose my motivation toward higher education until a day when I lost my dad. That day I promised myself that I will make my dad to be proud of me. After graduating my high school, I had a chance to be part one of the American Government program called Prep4Success. I have been lucky to graduate successfully from the program and get full scholarship, which covers 1st year of my college, Northwest College. However, the 2nd year of the college, I will have to figure out how I am going to afford the college.
Throughout many years of the observation, it is relatively easy to be successful when your close people, family, believe in you. Since the age of 10, I have three big dreams. They are to become an Ambassador, to open a Museum of my collections, and to publish my own book. To my disappointment, I have come to the realization that even my only parent, mother, did not believe that my dreams can come true.
When I was 9 years old, I lost my father which was a very big tragedy for the family, especially for me. My father was the only person who really supported me on being an excellent student at school. After his death, my mother became the only bread-earner of the family and she had to work her hardest engaging in different works, and to raise four of her children. Those hard works took my mother's all time and it led to the fact that she never had time to be interested about how her four kids were doing at school. For these reasons, none of her children showed great interest in education. It turned out, my mother's lack of attention led to me becoming the only child in the family who graduated secondary school with excellent marks, and that was all just because of my father's early efforts. However, it did not lower my appreciation towards my mother who raised four kids, kept us healthy and sustained the family, especially after losing my father.
Looking back, remembering the times when I did not even think of having a chance to study in a college until visiting Mary American Corner (MAC) accidentally several years ago. MAC is a place where we have a chance to learn about American Culture and Education. It was when one of my school teachers invited me to the MAC, I visited this place without knowing what awaits me inside. By entered to MAC, there were different talented students whose English language seemed perfect to me. Of course, I did not have that confidence and my English was very poor, but MAC became a chance to improve myself and my professional skills. To come to the city of Mary from a little remote village which is located about twenty five kilometers away, I understood it is a great chance to learn English by self-study at MAC library through English grammar books and activities. Telling myself "if other kids could speak English fluently, it means I can do it too" my confidence got higher day by day. I was attending MAC every day and learning English, asking AC volunteers to translate words and tried very hard to speak whenever I had a chance. While learning English, my relatives from father's side would visit me regularly and bring very hard English books to translate. They called this "checking" whether or not I am going to the city to learn English or to have fun. For the girl who just started learning English, science and biology books would definitely be hard to translate and understand and of course I failed on their trial. It felt like surrounding people wanted me to fail in every step, since they kept laughing that I could not translate those hard words. However, it did not stop me but made me stronger, I kept my persistence and achieved the goals of improving English.
By studying hard, I had a chance to take SAT and TOEFL tests from my savings and was accepted to my best fit College, Northwest College in Wyoming. Afterwards, I was very lucky to win the scholarship. This was the first time of feeling like I can achieve my three big dreams and the future goals.
The three big dreams are now becoming true. I am having a collection of different kind of coins and money from all over the world, writing my own adventure book, and attending the College with the major of International Relation, which will give me a chance to be an Ambassador. Moreover, I am very happy that I have chosen this college because it gives me opportunity to be the part of Model United Nations and it is going to be my first step towards one of my big dreams.
Now when none of my family members does not work, I really need a scholarship, a little support to graduate so I could afford the second year of my college. First, I will prove myself that village girl from Central Asia can be Someone in this life and secondly, my parent and my siblings will accept that I could achieve my goals even though they did not believe in me. I really hope that I will get this scholarship because this assistance means something enormous for a village girl, me. A village girl was dreaming big and is willing to dream big in order to make her dreams true.
Lastly, I want to thank all of you for your support!
