My dad, Victor Roque, was extremely hard working. Born and raised in Guatemala, he began working at the tender age of five years old. Earning 2 Quetzales a day (the equivalent of 26 cents), my father would heard cattle to green pastures. When he came to America, at the age of 19, he found the opportunity to work on cruise ships and travel the world. He embraced the world’s many countries and cultures, letting the experience shape him into an open-minded and kind man. It was with this understanding of the world that he approached his every day life by being loving and carefree.
Ten months ago, he was diagnosed with stage IV gastric cancer. Throughout these months he bravely underwent stomach surgery, nine chemotherapy treatments with medications, and countless doctor's visits. He continued to work and support our family through his illness. Although his spirit was willing to keep fighting, his body was unable to withstand the aggressive treatments. On May 9, 2015 my dad passed away at the age of 48. My mother,13 year-old brother, and I are grateful to our Lord, Jesus Christ, for the time we were able to spend with him. His suffering has ended, and we are comforted knowing he is in the loving arms of God.
