Our coworker and friend, Tori, was involved in a hit and run crash. Tori was knocked off of her bike and sent to the ER where she was treated. She is banged up and bruised as also fractured her spinal cord.
Tori needs your help, she is a single parent that works more than one job to support her family. She is a trusted and loyal team member at the Wisconsin Bike Fed, who has been with us for over five years.
We are beyond infuriated about this matter because we know this crash could have been prevented if there were safer bicycle facilities such as protected bike lanes. Tori was struck by a reckless driver that used a bike lane on 29th and Greenfield as a passing lane. This street was just totally reconstructed, it’s utterly maddening knowing that the project scope did not include better bike facilities! The project scope said that the reconstruction benefits would be increased safety for people biking and walking. This is just not the case, there are gaps of wide-open spaces with little of anyone parking on the street next to a bike lane, it’s free and open for speeding and treating that area on the street as an additional lane! Greenfield is one of the very few East/West streets on the Southside that has a bike lane -and is most convenient for metro travelers. But it’s a gamble still, and it’s an unacceptable outcome.
Please make sure you donate and also send a letter to the Department of Public Works administration [email redacted] and Mayor Barrett at [email redacted] tell them you’re sick and tired of people that bike and walk being treated like second class and take urgent broad-based public action and invest in safe and healthy streets for Milwaukee residents and visitors.
Tori was doing everything right, this could have been different.
