Beirut victims, the minute that changed our lives
We are Carlos and Sonja, a newly married couple, happy and in love.
On August the 4th 2020, a large amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the port of the city of Beirut (Lebanon) accidentally exploded. We are lucky to be alive, but our lives have changed forever.
Carlos and I got married in December 2019 on the island of Cyprus; we were happy with hopes and dreams for our future life together.
My husband Carlos Valencia, a salsa teacher and actor from Colombia, has always followed his passion for acting (theatre and television), with his big dream to star in an international movie. I, myself was born and raised in Germany, where I studied to become a lawyer and a couple of years ago accepted a great job opportunity in Beirut.
Our love story began, when the two of us met in Carlos’ hometown Cali, a city recognised as "The Capital of Salsa" and believe it or not, it was love at first sight. Since then we have lived and experienced many happy, sad and difficult moments together, but nothing could have prepared us for this most challenging time now as a couple.
At the moment we are slowly recovering from physical injuries, while mental or emotional ones will require much more time to heal.
Our home was only a short distance from the docks and was destroyed in the blast. We were at home when this terrible accident happened.
Amongst the injuries my husband sustained were a break of the left elbow and several fingers, fractures that needed to be operated on immediately. We then discovered the ligaments in the left knee were damaged, as well as his kneecap. This will require further surgery within the next 3 months. Apart from the fractures, his ankle is still swollen and he is confined to a wheelchair at this moment in time. Carlos also sustained lacerations to the left side of his face and most likely will have to undergo cosmetic surgery.
I sustained multiple lacerations and burns to the upper left side of my body, as well as my right leg and foot. The part of my body that has affected me the most is my face, where I sustained a considered amount of deep lacerations. Some of the glass was only removed from my face days after the explosion, which means that my face won’t look the same as before. The doctors have already told me that I will require cosmetic surgery. I still can hardly walk, which is down to a cut on my shin that goes all the way through to my muscle.
I’m worried for my husband as his profession unfortunately is image conscious. For me as a young woman, having life changing scaring to my body and face are unthinkable. It will be necessary for both of us to have reconstructive surgery.
This is why we ask for your kind support and donations, which will help us with the costs towards rebuilding our lives. The money will be used for our physical rehabilitation and reconstructive surgeries, since our health insurance does not cover these types of procedures.
Sometimes we cry, sometimes we laugh, we remember, we are surprised. Then suddenly we go silent and look into the void, or we look into each other's eyes and kiss because we are alive, because we never want to miss the opportunity to do something together.
Today we celebrate life, we do our best to have a positive outlook on life. However, thinking ahead, nothing will ever be the same.

Somos Carlos y Sonja, un matrimonio de recién casados, felices y enamorados. Este es el minuto que nos cambió la vida, que nos llevó a un antes y un después en nuestra existencia, debido a la trágica explosión ocurrida en Beirut (Líbano).
Carlos y yo nos casamos en Diciembre del 2019 en la Isla de Chipre, felices (como ven en la imagen), con ilusiones y sueños para realizar juntos. Carlos Valencia, un Colombiano alegre, profesor de salsa y su pasión la actuación (teatro y televisión), su gran sueño es llegar al Cine. Yo, Sonja Schulz, soy de Alemania, mi profesión abogada, decido aceptar una buena oportunidad laboral en Beirut.
Nos conocimos en Cali (Colombia), ciudad reconocida como “La capital de la salsa”. Fue amor a primera vista, ahí empezó nuestra historia. Hemos vivido muchos momentos felices, tristes y difíciles. Creo que este es nuestro momento más complejo como pareja, pues ha requerido valentía y apoyo mutuo todo el tiempo.
A veces lloramos, a veces reímos, nos acordamos, nos sorprendemos, de pronto nos callamos y miramos al vacío, de pronto nos miramos a los ojos y nos besamos porque estamos vivos, porque nunca dejamos pasar la oportunidad de hacer algo juntos.
En este momento estamos poco a poco recuperándonos de las heridas físicas, las mentales o emocionales requieren más tiempo.
Estuvimos siete días en el hospital, entre las lesiones que sufrió mi esposo: una ruptura del codo izquierdo, ruptura de los últimos dedos de la mano izquierda, el índice de la mano derecha, fracturas que necesitaron cirugía con urgencia; también ruptura de ligamentos en la rodilla izquierda, con fisura de rótula, la cual debe ser operada en unos tres meses máximo, su tobillo derecho está muy inflamado, aún no puede caminar. Parte del lado izquierdo de su rostro sufrió laceraciones. Lo más probable es que deba someterse a una cirugía estética.
Yo tengo laceraciones múltiples en mi brazo izquierdo, una cortadura en la planta del pie de derecho, y laceraciones en mi rostro, muchas. Mi rostro tenía mucho vidrio. Lastimosamente quedé muy comprometida, igual que mi esposo, necesito cirugías reconstructivas. No será igual al rostro que tenía antes de la explosión. En la pantorrilla derecha tengo una cortada profunda que llega hasta el músculo. Se me dificulta caminar.
Para la profesión de mi esposo y para mí como mujer, es necesario realizarnos cirugías reconstructivas, sufrimos muchas heridas en nuestro cuerpo y rostro, no sabemos cómo van a quedar las manos de mi esposo. Por su profesión, su imagen es importante y después de esto todo su cuerpo cambió.
Las heridas de mi cuerpo algunas son profundas, tengo temor que con el tiempo haya compromiso de tejido nervioso y muscular. Estas cirugías las necesitamos lo antes posible, para que el resultado sea satisfactorio deben realizarse máximo en los próximos tres meses.
Hoy celebramos la vida, hacemos lo posible por tener buena actitud. Sin embargo, pensando a futuro ya nada será igual.
Por esa razón acudimos a ustedes, de su apoyo y colaboración, ya que requerimos cubrir los gastos para las cirugías reconstructivas y rehabilitación física, pues nuestro seguro de salud no cubre este tipo de procedimientos.
