12/2/24 UPDATE - Aunt Bobbie has been in prison for an entire year now. The lawyer that was stated in the previous update never actually finished the appeal. My cousin and Aunt Bobbie are now on their 4th lawyer, who states that they are working on her appeal again, but she must stay in until March 2025 for anything to progress.
12/25/23 UPDATE - My mom was contacted by my cousin and Aunt Bobbie now has a Lawyer and has actively started her appeal.
11/4/23 UPDATE - Mesa County never moved her on 10/14. But Aunt Bobbie has now been placed in the DWCF (Denver Women's Correctional Facility) in Denver, CO. Her mugshot has been released.
10/14/23 UPDATE - They will be moving Aunt Bobbie to prison on Monday. (10/16/23)
10/11/23 UPDATE - They have arrested my aunt and has upped her sentence from 12 to 16 years in prison. The appeal lawyer is asking for $10,000 but I will not be increasing the goal. Just any little bit helps.
Hi, as many of you all know I am quiet and like to keep to myself -- and that includes asking for help. Everyone was so kind enough to help me out two years ago with a situation involving my mom and her hearing -- so I'm back once again. On behalf of my Aunt Bobbie, my cousins, my mom and her entire side of my family.
Please hear us out.
cw: drugs, racism.
It was on February 14th, 2022, Aunt Bobbie flew out to California with a friend. They had a rental car for the weekend -- and with Aunt Bobbie as the driver, decided to take it out for a drive through Mesa County, Colorado. They noticed something was wrong with the car, so they went to exchange it for a different one. After exchanging the vehicle and heading back to their stay, a cop happened to pull them over because he claimed she was yawning and following too close to the 18-wheeler they were behind. He asked to search their car, which neither resisted or had an issue with it so he did so. He decided to let them go, but not before asking to search their car one last time. He pulled out their spare tire -- and revealed a bag of cocaine. Both were confused since neither were privy to the drugs being there, and arrested on the spot. The officer also had a K9 Unit with him; which he did not use the entire time.
A few months later, my Aunt's friend (who was white and already had a previous record) was let go. After countless times flying out to Colorado over the course of a year, the trial was finally coming to a close. On September 25th, 2023, Aunt Bobbie had to fly out to Colorado for what she thought would be the last time. The trial lasted until September 30th. Not a single soul of color rested in that courtroom all of those days, but we still did not lose hope or confidence that she would come out victorious.
She was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
My heart sank the day that I received this news. She has no record for drugs or any sort of lawful indecency and was treated like a felon. Her court appointed lawyer told her if they could get him $5000, she could be back home in New York for a month, so for the next several days my cousin scrambled to get up that cash to bring her mother home. Thankfully she pulled through so she could rest for the month. For those 3 days, she was locked up with no access to a shower -- and was sent home without her belongings which she managed to get later. In the months time she was able to find someone to take her case, but nothing can be done until she returns back to Colorado on October 11th to be sentenced. She will lose her job. She will lose her house. My two cousins will have to move in with their father because of all of this. She has had to pay out of pocket for every plane ticket two and from home, and the monthly drug tests they send her which have all been clean. (and around $200 each time) My Aunt's "friend" has already blocked her after this whole ordeal. It has put so much tremendous stress on all of us, and none of us know what it would take financially to support the lawyer and get her out of a place where she doesn't belong. After working closely with her, my cousin and my mom for over a month and a half, I have set the goal to what I believe would be most accommodating. Once again, NONE OF THIS MONEY WILL BE GOING TO ME. It will all be going directly to my Aunt and my cousin as they figure out how to maneuver the court system and law to give her the justice that she deserves. Any bit helps, whether it be $1 or $500. And because I know the nature of GFM's and people can be skeptical, if you would like to see proof of anything, please just ask, it will be provided.
The stop-and-search conducted on Aunt Bobbie by the Mesa County police officer WAS NOT LEGAL. He was given permission to search the inside of the car and the inside only; he cut the spare tire without her consent and without use of the K9 Unit with him.
She did not deserve this. Please help bring justice to her. Please help bring my Aunt Bobbie home.
Thank you for reading.
