Victor "Vic" Powell retired from the Norfolk Police Department in 2019 after serving thirty years.
Vic started his career in 1989. After graduating the 43rd Police Academy, Vic was assigned to the First Patrol Division. In 1997, Vic was assigned to the Detective Bureau. It did not take long for Vic to find his true calling. Vic was assigned to the Homicide Squad where he solved some of the city's most violent cases. During his career as a detective, Vic helped solve hundreds of cases and received numerous awards both locally and nationally for his work as a Homicide and Cold Case Detective.
Shortly after Vic retired in 2019, he returned as a part-time investigator. It wasn't long after his return, that he was diagnosed with a serious and extended illness. At the end of March 2020, Vic was furloughed due to the COVID-19 virus resulting in a significant loss of income to him and his family.
Additionally, Vic was in and out of area doctor's offices and hospitals during the later part of 2019 through 2020. Vic fought his illness hard, just as he did for all of his cases. But unfortunately in May of 2020 Vic passed away.
Vic really fit the true definition of "a good man". Vic was a gentle giant and would help anybody that needed help.
Vic leaves behind a wife and several extended family members. To help cushion the blow of their expenses, please reach out to his family with a donation and to offer your condolences. Your help is truly appreciated and absolutely needed.
