Hi, my name is Pat Bayman and I'm fundraising to assist Vic Henderson Jr to purchase medical equipment and assistive devices that will be necessary for him to get around and assist with his daily tasks.
If you are at all involved in motor racing in Ontario, you will know Vic Jr, and his parents Vic and Darlene, from their tireless volunteer work on the grid at CTMP.
At the beginning of July 2021 Vic Jr went to ER because of severe pain, within days he was in a coma, a state in which he remained for many weeks. After many, many tests and procedures, he was finally diagnosed with having contracted Jamestown Canyon Virus. This is a fairly rare disease spread through mosquito bites. Severe cases may develop neurologic symptoms such as meningitis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain) or meningoencephalitis (inflammation of the brain and surrounding tissues).
Unfortunately Vic Jr was one of these severe cases, resulting in complete paralysis of the right side of his body, difficulties with speech, and some cognitive issues.
While Vic Jr's hard work and determination together with the dedication of wonderful speech and occupational therapists has achieved much, he will remain unable to work or to do many of the things most of us take for granted.
The cost of the equipment that Vic Jr needs to assist him in his everyday living adds up to approximately $40,000 (75% of this may be recoverable through various government credits and the assistance of charitable bodies). In addition to this alterations will have to be made to his parent's home, who will also have to purchase a vehicle that will allow them to transport Vic Jr. to and from anywhere he needs to be; this will likely have to be a van that has been modified to accept a wheelchair.
The approximate cost of each piece of equipment identified by the therapists as being required is as follows: Sara Stedy sit to stand $3,000, Bariatric Commode $350, Hoyer Patient Lift $4,000, Specialized Electric Wheelchair $20,000, and an Outdoor Wheelchair Lift $13,000.
In this case, as in every fundraising cause, every dollar counts. Please give as much or as little as you can, and please share this with anyone else you think will be willing to help.
Thank you!
