A little over two months ago my family received news that turned our lives completely upside down. It started off as a few tumors in my mom's breasts. Surgery is what she needed, and everything would be OK.
This news quickly changed and escalated. As my mom saw more doctors, they found more tumors. One buried in her chest, more in lymph nodes in her armpits, and then her spine.
With that she made her way to the best cancer treatment facility in the country. In Houston, Texas.
Life expectancy; we were first told six months. There was no cure and I was going to lose my mom. This news changed, and for the better. There is now a chance my mom can live more than five years. But the thing about a terminal illness, it can be completely unpredictable. Anything can happen at any time, and my mother is still undergoing all sorts of tests to look for any more tumors. She will have to be active in treatment for the rest of her life.
My mom, my family; we have done a very good job at staying positive.

'Doctors are wrong all of the time.'
'I hear stories of people beating cancer often.'
We try really hard to stay positive. But; the reality is... My mom is writing letters for us for weddings and graduation just in case she isn't here to see it herself. She is organizing belongings for my family so we know what is whose just in case she can't tell us. She is touching up her will, and that is the reality.
This is real, and the only thing we can do is continue treatment and enjoy our time together while we can.
What inspired me to set up a go fund me page, was a post I came across earlier this week. A young man, early 20s, received a speeding ticket of $500. He created a go fund me to raise enough money to pay it off. The post, in my opinion, was rather funny. And quite honestly if he hadn't already raised well over $2000 I probably would've gave him five dollars towards it. There were many different reactions from people on what this guy did. Many of which had to do with money going to people that I actually need it.
This really made me think about my mom, my family and our situation.
My mom can no longer do the same amount of work she was doing before, some days she cannot even walk. She does what she can from home on the days she is able.
We can only imagine how much her first trip to Texas cost, and she will have to be going back continuously.
I have many plans in the making and different ideas of fundraising to raise money for my mom and cancer research. Though, I have now decided that until these plans go into play, this isn't a bad place to start.
That young man raised over $2000 for a speeding ticket... of $500. I am setting a goal of $1000. Anything helps, even just positive and kind words and a prayer.
My mom has worked harder than words can describe to save lives of others on a daily basis. She created one of the best suicide prevention programs in Northeast Wisconsin from scratch and with that, has touched hundred if not thousands of lives. My mom lives and breathes to help others, she always has. She has worked 25/8 (not even physically possible) to serve the community for the better. She has beant over backwards for people she doesn't even know, because everyone deserves a chance, let alone a second chance and we all just need help sometimes.
It's time to give back.
