Shoes for Hermanus
Donation protected
Dear friends,
As many of you know, my mom lost her battle with cancer in November 2018 and she went to be with our Lord. Mom was an avid runner, she ran countless half-marathons, marathons and ultra-marathons. Raising three boys, she needed to get out of the house and running was her “thing”. She also completed 12 Comrades marathons, a 56 mile treacherous run from one city to another in South Africa. Winning the race one year and coming a close second and third in 2 other years.
One of my greatest joys and memories that I shared with my mom, was that each year when I visited SA, I gave my mom a pair of running shoes. Running shoes are extremely expensive in South Africa, and this was a great way for me to help my mom with her passion. In return, my mom would donate her used pair of running shoes to a runner who was less fortunate and unable to afford shoes. (It is not uncommon to see someone run a race barefooted in South Africa).
The last pair of shoes that I took for my mom, she was unable to use, so my dad donated her shoes to a local running club. This past year, at a race in my parents’ home town, they held a moment of silence for my mom in her memory and presented her shoes to a less fortunate runner.
Unfortunately I did not receive any of my mom’s running genes, but in 2020 I have committed to run a half marathon in my mom’s memory and also to raise funds. The funds will be used to buy 3 pair of running shoes and running gear to donate to less fortunate runners in my parents’ home town of Hermanus. It is a great opportunity for me to give back and also continue my mom’s legacy. Please join me in my effort to raise $500 for the less fortunate.
