I need help and guidance. I am a 66 years young single teacher. I have been teaching for 26 years and had hoped to retire next year. Last year on June 6, 2023 at 9:00 PM, a car ran into the corner of my house. It knocked the entire front of the house over by about two inches and buckled my hardwood floors. The Army Corp of Engineers came and shored up the corner of my house so that it would not collapse. The people that had been driving the car had been drinking. The police report was faulty, the people were never charged. I did my first GoFundMe so that I could pay the deductible to get the initial work started. The reconstruction company moved me and my son out of the house into a hotel in August so that they could fix the house. In looking for issues within the walls, there are no interior walls in my living room and den, and half of the ceiling is missing in the living room. The thermostats have been removed so there is no heat or air conditioning in the house and electricity has been cut off of the front part of the house. Basically the house is uninhabitable. After many delays I was informed in February that the accident had uncovered other issues in my 72-year-old house that I had inherited from my parents. These issues had to be repaired along with the damage caused by the accident in order to pass inspections. My insurance company will not cover these issues so I have to come up with $65,000 before they can even start on the house. Did I mention that I was a single teacher hoping to retire next year? Two weeks ago my insurance had stopped paying for my son and I to live in the hotel, so I am now paying it out of my income tax refund and soon will be taking it out of my annuity that was for my retirement. I consulted lawyers who would not take my case because no one inside the house suffered any physical damage. My doctor has diagnosed me with stress and anxiety disorders along with PTSD because I sometimes wake up at night screaming. I am presently trying to either refinance my house or get a loan. Unfortunately using the house for collateral is an issue because of the state that it’s in. My additional issue is that this will increase my mortgage payment. This means that I will either have to keep teaching or retire and get another job. Well, if I have to do so, I guess that is what will have to happen. I also just found out that the insurance is no longer paying for the reconstruction company to store my furniture that was taken out of my living room and den so they are going to return it all to the house....with the hole in the corner and the buckled floors. I’m just a little upset because all of this has happened to me….and all I was doing on June 6, 2023 was watching TV and getting ready to go to sleep so that I could teach my Fourth Graders the next morning.
