Help Support Kayla’s Road To Recovery

Hello, my name is Kayla and I currently reside in Green Bay, WI. I am a 30 year old mother to 6 beautiful children. Usually, I wouldn’t ask for help in this way, but as of lately, there has been a SIGNIFICANT amount of unforeseen challenges that have came my way, so I have decided to call upon family and friends for help. First and foremost, I just wanted to say thank you in advance, and I am entirely grateful and appreciative from the bottom of my heart for any and all help offered.

On this past Mother’s Day, 2025, I was severely injured in a hit and run leaving me with severe injuries. My leg was completely twisted around, and my ankle hanging there. My ankle was completely shattered, along with a broken tibia and fibula and a broken wrist. I was rushed to the emergency room at St. Vincent’s Hospital here in Green Bay, where I was admitted for 10 days and had to have an emergency procedure done just to be able to get my foot and leg to even fit into a splint. Days later I underwent another surgery as well where I then had to get screws and plates inserted into my leg and ankle.

Following my stay at St. Vincent’s Hospital, I was then admitted to Green Bay Rehabilitation Hospital where I stayed for 2 weeks, doing 3 hours of physical and occupational therapy, daily. I had to relearn how to get around again and work on different tools that I could utilize to rebuild my strength as I was unable to walk and care for myself as I normally would. I had a non weight bearing leg so I had to use a walker and a wheel chair. I had no feeling whatsoever in my right foot up into my leg right under my knee.

Discharging from the rehabilitation hospital, I was only home for about a week when I ended up having to go back to the hospital and getting admitted for the second time due to an infection in my ankle. My skin had split open around my incision and became infected and I became very sick. I was having high fevers. I had to be on two different IV antibiotics. I felt like my body was completely shutting down on me. The infection was almost septic and luckily it wasn’t. They were able to get it under control and sent me home with more antibiotics and I was home for about another week and finished my antibiotics, and 2-3 days after finishing them, the infection came back. I was told there was a chance this could happen. That the infection could’ve been more than just a skin infection and that it could’ve went deeper into my hardware (plates and screws) and my bones. So here I am, admitted into the hospital again, where I have now underwent my third procedure and had to get a whole different incision, they took out the plates for the right side of the fibula, but the tibia plates are still in tact, cleaned out the infection, but are taking cultures of my bone and tissues and hardware and are going from there. I have been in the hospital more than I’ve been home since Mother’s Day. I’ve missed out on two of my children’s birthdays because of this injury and infection. I am still unable to fully walk, I was told I can start trying to put weight on it but it’s been hard. I still use my wheel chair more than anything and it’s uncomfortable. At this point walking normally again seems so far away.

Lastly, to say that the amount of stress and hurt that this has put not only on me, but on my family and children, physically, mentally, emotionally and financially is devastating, would be an understatement. Insurance is only allowed to cover so much of my hospital bills. Not to mention, the people that did this to me have not been caught yet and are still walking free. I deserve justice as I did not deserve this at all. I have given the police their names and nothing is being done about it. I do not understand why it’s not being taken seriously enough to be looked into as it should be, so I am unable to press charges at this time to even try to get any restitution to use towards my hospital bills and medical expenses. I am asking for help to cover things such as medical equipment and expenses, transportation expenses as I cannot drive right now and have to ask for rides. Again, I just want to say that anything and everything would greatly be appreciated during this extremely difficult time ❤️ Thank you!
