We are Helena and Hira. Hira is a trainee service dog.
I was diagnosed with Bipolar in 2012 which started a very difficult journey for me. I have had numerous episodes over the past 4 years, which have resulted in multiple hospital admissions. I have rapid cycling bipolar which means multiple episodes a year are common for me.
I have struggled with my diagnosis since being diagnosed. Having Hira has really helped me to confront the stigma head on and given me the confidence to get out into social situations (even as basic as the shops) that I previously would have avoided. When fully trained Hira will be able to sense an bipolar episode by reading the biochemical changes in the body.
Hira has changed my life.
But she is still in trainee status. In order to for her to transition to accredited service dog she needs further training and followed by a public access test.
We have been funding her training privately but costs are mounting up, especially as my ability to work is limited.
