Veterans for Peace Golden Rule in Detroit

Tax deductible
The Golden Rule Peace Boat, a project of Veterans For Peace, is expected to be docking at the downtown Detroit Milliken State Park marina August 13-17, 2023 as part of a 15-month voyage, with 100+ stops, to inform people about the dangers of nuclear weapons proliferation and promote disarmament.

The Golden Rule will be on display at the Milliken marina during daylight hours with evenings dedicated to crewmembers giving presentations about the history, and the reason for the current cruise… “to advance Veterans For Peace opposition to nuclear weapons and war, and to do so in a dramatic fashion".

Chapters 93 and 74 are taking the lead in organizing this exciting opportunity, and we hope you will join us in supporting that effort with a tax-deductible donation. Many public events will be held, in and around Detroit while the boat is in port.

The Golden Rule began its trip in September on the Mississippi River and will circle the south and east coasts before reaching the Great Lakes.

Background: In 1958 a crew of Quakers sailed the Golden Rule towards the Marshall Islands, intending to interfere with atmospheric nuclear weapons tests. As a result of this highly publicized mission and public outcry about the radiation blowing around the world, President Kennedy signed the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in 1963. The Golden Rule action inspired many peacemakers and peace ships that followed, including Greenpeace.

Golden Rule was rescued from a watery grave in 2010 and restored to her former beauty by Veterans For Peace and others who support her new mission: to promote a nuclear-free future, to educate about the dangers of radiation to humanity and the environment, and to support peaceful alternatives to war.

The Golden Rule Project supports the climate justice movement and conversion from fossil fuels and nuclear power to renewable energy.

The Golden Rule is a “Weapon of Mass Education”. Her bright red sails with a giant peace symbol and Veterans For Peace logo attract a diverse audience, allowing us to “Preach Beyond the Choir”

Please help if you can with a donation to the Golden Rule project, and join us in August for some exciting times. Every dollar you donate will go directly to support the Golden Rule's trip and mission. Thank you.
