Veteran on dialysis injured in hit and run

Donation protected
John, a Navy veteran battling end stage kidney failure, was hit by an SUV while standing in his front yard on Sunday June 23, 2019.

The person responsible for the accident left the scene, leaving John badly injured and going in and out of consciousness on the side of the road. The SUV hit him so hard, the passenger side view mirror was torn off on impact.

Fortunately neighbors found John and did everything they could to keep him conscious and calm until the paramedics arrived.

John's system was already taxed due to renal failure. He was on dialysis and a kidney transplant candidate. The week leading up to this event he had just received news that he was accepted to the transplant list which had boosted his morale and outlook for the future. He was just starting to feel a bit better and starting to gain a little more independence when this senseless incident happened. This has unfortunately set him and the family back on literally every level including putting a lot of stress on his system and kidneys.

John is very fortunate to be alive however he has sustained a number of injuries, the extent of which are still unknown as each day seems to uncover some new challenge. He has already undergone one surgery to put his ankle / leg back together and they are looking at possibly another for his shoulder. He has multiple sprains and is in a great deal of pain. There is still concern of possible infection of the port he has for dialysis, the surgery site(s) and fluid in the lungs.

John has a very long road to recovery, which may include multiple procedures, treatments, hospital and rehabilitation stays along with modifications to the home to make it accessible.

As we wait patiently for his body to recover and recuperate, we want to make sure that John and his wife has the support they need and can focus on getting better during this difficult time. Funds collected on this page will help ease the burden of medical expenses and bolster the financial support while John is recovering from this horrific accident.

We are currently taking things day by day, praying John will heal quickly and completely, will be able to find a match and be healthy and strong enough to receive his kidney transplant.

While John is recovering we ask to please refrain from visiting the hospital or home until further notice. We know that John and his wife Paula would love to hear from you though, so we invite you to send messages of support and virtual hugs (messages, pictures, video, audio) to the email address below:

Your prayers for his recovery, help to spread the word and any support you may provide is all greatly appreciated.
