Kevin McCarthy served his country as a Navy Corpsman, with the Marines from 1990 - 1998. During his service, Kevin saved the lives of many and stitched together many wounded comrades and civilians alike. Kevin loves to laugh, enjoys crafting a great meal for family and friends, and has an unquenchable thirst for adventure and achievement. Now we have a chance to give back to someone who gave so much serving his country and us.
While on a family vacation to Southern California in mid-July, our friend Kevin was in an accident that resulted in major spinal injury, a broken neck, cranial and nose fractures, landing him in the ICU for the better part of a week. The days in the ICU were spent stabilizing his spine and dealing with Central Cord Syndrome, characterized by loss of feeling and motion to the arms and hands. Even though doctors were not optimistic, Kevin had a miraculous breakthrough, becoming stable enough to make his trip back home for surgery and recovery.
Once Kevin was stable enough to travel, his wife, Joyelle, brought him and their 2 children home to Northern California to continue Kevin's medical treatment with the VA. Unfortunately, upon returning home, Kevin learned his neurosurgeon at the local VA Hospital, was out of town, so they could not receive him and he would have to remain at home until his doctor returned, or a spinal cord rehab bed opened up. Kevin, being the tough Veteran he is, spent a week at home with a broken neck until his neurosurgeon came back and admitted him. Shortly after entering the hospital, Kevin underwent a successful 10-hour surgery to repair the damage to his cervical spine.
We are grateful for how far Kevin has come since his accident but know the path to recovery is long. During this time, Kevin will need to focus on healing and rehabilitation. Due to the severity of his injury, Kevin will be unable to work which puts tremendous financial burden on the family.
I am asking everyone to rally around Kevin and Joyelle during this time so Kevin can focus on getting back to his healthiest possible self. Kevin is determined to recover and go back to work as soon as possible.
