Veronica Ann Moore: Memorial Fundraiser

Veronica "Roniy" Ann Moore (pictured above, left of frame): July 26th, 1986 - March 21st, 2020

On March 13th, my friend Roniy started her day as many do, preparing for an honest day's work as security through Allied Universal to provide for her children, the light of her life. After a shower, she told her brother that she'd developed a headache and had begun to feel dizzy. Shortly after, she passed out, unresponsive.

Roniy was taken to an ICU, where the doctors found she'd suffered a severe cerebral aneurysm. The hole torn open and subsequent leakage were extensive enough that her attending physicians informed her mother Kathy not even surgery was likely to save her. Her mother gave her a week's time to grant her peace and to ask for prayers. Deep in an induced coma, Roniy hung on, but continued to deteriorate. On March 21st, looking more serene and relaxed than she'd been in a long time, Roniy was taken off her respirator and died free of worldly pain at the age of 33.

This fundraiser has been made on the behalf of Roniy's family to help cover the expense of Roniy's cremation as they prepare to take her to her final resting place alongside departed loved ones in Wichita, KS. Any funds in excess of this campaign's goal will go towards her mother and two beautiful children, both to provide a financial buffer in the wake of her sudden absence and to act as backup in the event that additional expenses incurred from her hospital stay require payment in the future.

A Brief Biography of My Friend

Roniy started her life in Wichita, born to Kathy Ann Moore on July 26th, 1986. In the words of her family, Roniy was "personable, friendly, athletic, kind, generous with others, [and] a free spirit." That generosity is a quality, Roniy's mother relates, that she shares with her father, both parent and child always known to be the type to quite literally give the coat off their back for their friends. Her exuberance for love and life made her a handful at times; her joy to meet with her cousins once led to a perilous fall off a coffee table that required some stitches after. In true Roniy fashion, she would later reminisce over this with a smile.

Roniy was placed in ballet as early as 3, and though she wasn't terribly graceful, she transitioned into tap dance at the age of 5 and kept herself physically active with talent shows for years after. Her passion for basketball developed around the age of 7 at her local community center. When she left Kansas for Las Vegas at 15, she placed right into Western High School's varsity basketball team, her tall height lending well to her position as the team's center. Extending her interests to track and the shot put on top of that, Kathy remembers that youthful Roniy as her "little athletic girl."

In adulthood, Roniy worked at the movie theater in Texas Station, then later at a daycare at Palace Station; though she would become a certified daycare provider in the time in between, her calling was elsewhere. She came to work as a security guard for Cypress Private Security in April of 2014, where she'd eventually be assigned guard duty at Chapel of the Flowers on the Las Vegas Strip.

It's during this time that her Chapel family- myself included- would come to know Roniy, both for the good she accomplished through her deeds and the amiable warmth of her soul. To us, Roniy wasn't just a security guard; she was a protector, confidante, and true friend. More than simply offering a stern word to transients and guarding our couple's ceremonies from unwanted visitors, Roniy would regularly help in making our weddings a reality. If that meant getting enough seats for an outdoor gazebo ceremony, helping our wedding coordinators usher guests into chapels, or anything else that we needed a hand with? No matter the task, we could count on Roniy to be there for us.

And on lonely nights under dim light and down paths less traveled, many of us relied on her to provide safe passage to our vehicles. It's on these walks on and off the property that Roniy would share her good-natured sense of humor and the genuine interest she took in those she watched over. She was the first to know of children on the way, provided a motherly voice at trying times, and could cut through any BS the world threw our way with a disarming affability and some well-timed booming laughter. Even after Cypress was absorbed by Allied and Roniy stopped being our security, her beaming face was impossible to forget.

Some Closing Words

Between the end of February and the start of March, Roniy spent her last few weeks celebrating her family's birthdays; the last was the 87th birthday of her beloved NaNa. The night of March 12th, after dinner and in good spirits, Roniy went out spur-of-the-moment in the rain to her local Cold Stone Creamery for ice cream, much to the befuddlement of Kathy. Spontaneous as it was, it made Roniy quite happy, and that's all that really matters to her mother.

Writing this has been harder on more levels than I can articulate, though what we feel pales in comparison to the loss of a mother than her 13 year old daughter and 4 year old son must now endure. Roniy didn't live an easy life- she often worked to give herself respite from the trials of single motherhood, and struggled with her health for some time- but she still managed to achieve more in the time she had than I can ever commit to posterity.

If you'd like to help out her family in this time of need, I beseech you to consider a donation to this fundraiser. As well, her family requests that any flowers you'd like to send be submitted to Palm Cheyenne Mortuary in Las Vegas, NV, which is where Roniy's ashes are currently kept in the interim. After the recent quarantine comes to a close, there will be a memorial service near Duck Creek Trailhead so her many friends and family can safely attend; I will update everyone with further details as they come to me.

Thank you for reading. If nothing else, I can only hope this has expressed the magnitude of the loss felt with Roniy's passing, and the joy she imparted to those with the privilege to have met her.

I'll always be glad I met you, Roniy.
