In February 2023, Verlin and Kathy had traveled to Arizona to escape the Iowa cold and spend time exploring the trails of Arizona via horseback. Less than a week into the trip, Verlin was bucked off with severe damage to his back and spinal cord, along with several broken bones and ribs. After 2 surgeries and 2 weeks in the hospital, the path of rebuilding is about to begin.

This rebuilding will require some time in Arizona, likely a medical flight back to Chicago, and planning on rehabilitation at Shirley Ryan Ability Labs in downtown Chicago.
