I'm a long term customer of Vergennes Laundry a wood-fired bakery, cafe and épicerie. The menu reflects two French backgrounds (Montreal & France) and is influenced by Nadia's travel abroad, having immersed herself in different communities' cultures and their love for food.

Our much beloved cafe is having to move down the street from their present location. The landlords decided to not renew Nadia's lease so she is renovating the former Jackman's Fuels location on Main Street in Vergennes.

I have created this fundraiser to help with the cost of renovation and moving.

This move to a new location is bitter sweet for Nadia but also an opportunity to make the new space all their own.

As Nadia said on her Instagram feed:

"Turning heartache into celebration. Today I have fired the Woodfire oven for the last time. Although not our last weekend ( August 17th is our last day in this location) it will be the last time we bake bread allowing for the Woodfire oven to cool down before we removed it. I wish I could say we are moving it to install it in the new shop but an oven like this does not work that way and can only be used for parts that remain. I want to tell you the last few months there has been so many tears, fears , body aches, lawyers and doubt of my ability to make it through it. I don’t know why people do what they do. Someone told me I don’t understand it because I would I never do it to another and somehow it calmed me.

But today, is an end of an era for this beautiful woodstove that I bought with all my savings and a loan from the previous owner. Today this beautiful woodfire will make our bread, I remember how long it took me to understand her, I called her my master, she made me cry she ate all my butter and chocolate and burnt my bread but slowly I learned her, slowly she became a friend who took what I offered and gave beautiful loaves and pastries in return .

Today I want to turn this sadness into celebration! I want to honor her by doing what we have done all along make good food for good people. As I fed her with wood all night, I slowly thanked her, I am sad but I want this sadness to rise to something more a celebration of her, of what we have done here together. To Ryan who learned the oven in the early days with me, Jesse who baked anything she can think up out of there and my dear husband Kevin, that somehow agreed to help out one day and ended up mastering it- thank you for putting up with heat and making magic.
