Ventura Police K9 Jag Fundraiser

Donation protected
Meet K9 Jag, a 5 and 1/2- year-old German Shepherd trained in Narcotics Detection and Urban Tracking with the Ventura Police Department. As strong as he is, Jag was rushed into surgery last week, and we need help raising funds to cover medical expenses.

As many of you know, VPD's K9 Unit is funded solely through community donations and funds raised by our K9 Unit to help pay for our canines, their training, and ongoing medical bills. All of our canines, past and present, have been paid for through the generosity of the National Police Dog Foundation, local businesses, and individuals. Officer Trevor Hrynyk and K9 Jag have been partners since March of 2016 when Jag was purchased through a generous donation from our local Land Rover Jaguar of Ventura.

On July 22, 2020, Officer Trevor Hrynyk noticed Jag wasn't acting like himself. He vomited in the backseat of his patrol vehicle and stopped eating. Officer Hrynyk immediately took Jag to the vet, where, after multiple abdominal X-rays, a large amount of foreign material was found blocking Jag's intestines. Doctors tried to remove it through his esophagus, but the material was too large. Jag was rushed into surgery and remained in the vet hospital for 24 hours. He was sent home on July 25, 2020.

Jag will not be at work for a minimum of two weeks, and once he returns, he will be confined to light duty for a few months until he fully recovers. The total cost of his various vet visits and procedures is upwards of $6,000. Jag's initial donor, our local Land Rover Jaguar of Ventura has donated $1,500 to support a portion of his medical bills.

We understand the financial strain the COVID-19 pandemic has placed on our community, as it has also challenged our community-funded K9 Unit. Annually, VPD hosts a Bark Out Loud Comedy Night around this time of year, which is its largest fundraiser. Since we are unable to host it this year due to the pandemic, an unexpected cost like is an extreme financial hardship for our K9 Unit.

If you would like to donate to K9 Jag's medical bills or the Ventura Police Department's K9 Unit, we would appreciate your financial support. For any questions or further information, please contact VPD's Community Outreach Specialist, Emily Graves, by calling [phone redacted].
