Venezuela Earthquake: Petunia Residents Relief Fund
On June 24, 2026, a devastating earthquake sequence struck north-central Venezuela and changed thousands of lives in seconds.
Los Palos Grandes, Caracas, was one of the neighborhoods hit hardest.
Conjunto Residencial Petunia, is a two-tower residential complex. One of the towers collapsed completely. The second tower has been condemned, and residents cannot return.
Between both towers, 46 families lost their homes.
- 27 families lived in the tower that collapsed.
- 19 families lived in the tower that is now uninhabitable.
We lost homes, vehicles, documents, clothing, medicine, personal belongings, and the stability of daily life. For many, there is no home to go back to.
This fund was created by Azorena, a Petunia resident to support the affected families of both towers with urgent needs and the first steps toward recovery.
How your donation will help
The immediate emergency following the earthquake has passed, but the needs of Petunia families remain significant. Residents lost their homes, belongings, important documents, and, in many cases, a substantial part of the patrimony they had built over many years.
At this stage, the purpose of the fund is less about responding to the first days of the emergency and more about helping affected families begin to put their lives back on track.
Funds will be used for expenses directly related to recovery, including:
* Legal fees and professional assistance needed to organize documentation and protect the interests of the affected owners.
* Legal advice and paperwork related to the eventual sale or disposition of the remaining property and land.
* Due diligence and other professional costs required to determine what can be recovered from the property and to help residents recover at least a portion of the value of what they lost.
* Replacement of identification, property records, and other documents destroyed or lost in the collapse.
* Preparation of powers of attorney and other legal documents required by residents who cannot personally carry out these procedures in Venezuela.
* Temporary housing and shelter expenses for residents who continue to need financial assistance.
The funds will be distributed among affected Petunia residents, all of whom are victims of the earthquake. Those residents will use the funds for the recovery expenses described above. Some will also make payments on behalf of the broader group for shared legal and administrative expenses, allowing those costs to be handled collectively rather than requiring every affected family to manage them individually.
Our objective is simple: to help families who lost their homes begin rebuilding their lives and, where possible, recover at least part of the patrimony that was lost in the disaster.
How funds will be managed
A small committee is being formed to review needs and guide distributions. The committee will include representation from Petunia affected families and an independent person with legal, finance, tax, or nonprofit experience.
Funds will be distributed based on verified need, with priority given to families facing the most urgent housing, medical, funeral, and basic living needs.
Transparency and distribution of funds
We want donors to know clearly who will receive the funds and how the money will be used.
An initial payment of US$1,500 will be made to attorney José Gutiérrez for legal work related to the consequences of the earthquake and the recovery process for Petunia residents.
The remaining funds will be distributed among the following affected Petunia residents:
Iván Hidalgo
Oscar Zabala Farias
Natalia Basurto
Josefina Bruni
Hermes Ramirez
All of the individuals listed above are victims of the earthquake and lost their homes or access to their homes as a result of the destruction at Petunia.
Funds will be transferred directly to recipients, including through Zelle.
Some of these recipients will use part of the funds to pay lawyers, document-processing expenses, due-diligence costs, and other legal or administrative fees on behalf of the larger group of affected residents. These are shared expenses connected with protecting residents’ rights, organizing the necessary documentation, and addressing the future disposition of the remaining property.
Other funds will help individual families with continuing recovery needs, particularly temporary housing and expenses necessary to reestablish their lives after losing their homes.
We will continue to provide updates on this GoFundMe page regarding the distribution and use of the funds while protecting the personal and financial information of the residents involved.
Important tax note
This campaign is not currently affiliated with a 501(c)(3), and donations are not currently tax-deductible.
The organizer is exploring fiscal sponsorship options so larger donors, employers, corporate matching programs, and donors who need a tax-deductible path may have that option in the future. We will update this page if that changes.
