Venezia's Battle - Hodgkins Lymphoma

March 2021
“You may have to fight the battle more than once before you win it.”

In 2020 Venezia was diagnosed with Stage 2 Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Through her strength and perseverance, along with the love and support from you all, she came out victorious and won her battle. Finally being cancer-free and returning back to normalcy in both her professional and personal life, she began to feel in control of her destiny once again.  Unfortunately, when it comes to cancer, there is always the possibility of reoccurrence. Venezia has once again received the news that no one should have to hear, the cancer has recurred.

In the midst of applying and interviewing for Physician Assistant School, Venezia has undergone various medical examinations. Whether it be a pet scan, excisional biopsy, bone marrow biopsy, or doctor’s appointments, her time has once again been engulfed by this extraneous process. Now dealing with the process of egg retrieval and freezing, the expenses have skyrocketed. While many may not be aware, this necessary process to ensure her fertility is not covered by health insurance.

Treatment this time around will look very different. Venezia will undergo immunotherapy for several months with the end goal being remission. Once in remission, she will undergo high intensity chemotherapy which will require a hospital stay. This will then be followed by a stem cell transplant. The stem transplant is a rigorous procedure that will require a hospital stay of at least a few weeks. The entirety of this treatment plan was made with curative intent.

While this can all seem very overwhelming, Venezia continues to be supported by the wonderful oncology staff at Miami Cancer Institute. Her family and friends will remain by her side through every single up and down this process will bring along with it. Since the emotional burden on both Venezia and her family is already extremely strenuous, we are using this platform once again to help relieve some of the financial stress they are now having to face. We are appreciative of any amount generously given. Prayers and good thoughts are always welcomed as well. Venezia is a warrior who will fight this battle with the utmost courage, bravery and tenacity possible. We have no doubt her strength and positive outlook will help guide her through to be victorious in the end.

We’d like to thank you in advance for all your love and support. Venezia feels it all and is greatly appreciative. #VenesVictorypt2 is underway!

June 2020

This GoFundMe has been created on behalf of Venezia Mata, a 24-year-old who was recently diagnosed with Stage II Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Due to COVID-19, this has become a trying time for everyone, but especially for Venezia and her family. As a recent Florida State graduate who has only been in the workforce for 2 years, Venezia does not have the financial stability to endure the medical bills that have already begun to pile up throughout her course of treatment. Your generous donations of any value will only help alleviate the financial stress Venezia now finds herself in.

Venezia’s journey with cancer all began on Mother's Day 2020 when she discovered a lump on the left side of her neck, right above her clavicle. As a medical scribe, Venezia knew this was not normal and that it would need to be examined immediately. That same week, doctors performed a biopsy and a CT scan to determine what this mass could be. After a few days of anxiously awaiting results, Venezia finally received a call. It was Lymphoma. Then came nine long, scary days of back to back tests and scans. On Wednesday, June 10th, she was officially diagnosed by her Oncologist at Baptist Hospital with stage II Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. On Friday, June 26th, 2020, Venezia will begin her chemotherapy treatment. As of now, her treatment is set to be 6 months long, where she will receive ABVD chemotherapy once every two weeks.

This all came about as Venezia is currently in the process of studying for the GRE and completing all other requirements necessary to apply to Physician Assistant (PA) schools. Her dream is to become a Physician Assistant where she will diagnose illnesses, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and help better the wellbeing of others. Those who know her are well aware of the giving and caring person she has always been and continues to become. This career path will most definitely fulfill her calling.

Venezia is a beautiful, independent, hardworking woman. She is the loving daughter of Frank and Jeanne, an exceptional role model to her little sister Alezia, a caring friend to many, and a beacon of hope to anyone who has the opportunity of knowing her. Those who know Venezia can attest to her positive spirit and strength, but right now she needs us to be strong for her as she battles cancer. We hope to bring the community together to uplift and support the Mata family as they fight through this rigorous journey.

Venezia’s friends and family are filled with a range of emotions, but are hopeful that she will persevere and come out of this stronger than before. We ask you and your families to please keep her in your prayers, and we thank you in advance for your kind donations. We will continue to update this page as Venezia begins her battle with cancer. Thank you in advance for all your love and support!

P.S. Venezia has decided to donate all remaining funds to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
