Velazquez home lost to Glass Fire

The Velazquez family – Catalina, Antonio, and their four children – have lived in the Napa Valley for almost 25 years and were owners of the local Mexican restaurant Armadillos. At the break of dawn on Monday, September 28th they tragically lost their home and most of their belongings in the Glass Fire that is still currently ravaging Napa County.
The local police told to evacuate as the fires were rapidly approaching. Catalina, her daughter Julie, and son Toñito, rushed out of the house with only four changes of clothes, towels, blankets and their school backpacks. Most regrettably, they forgot Toñito’s Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), a tool to help those with non-verbal autism communicate basic wants and needs. Antonio and his son Diego stayed behind in attempt to try to save their home, but soon realized they were in imminent danger. They left just in time with their German Shepherd but had to leave behind their twelve beloved hens. After coming upon a video shared on Twitter of their home in flames, they knew there would be damage, but when Antonio was able to access their road the next day, he realized everything was gone.
Catalina and Antonio first immigrated to this country in the 1980’s and have worked hard not only to contribute to the local economy, but also to raise upstanding children that are compassionate, driven, and kind. Karina, their eldest daughter, is attending Portland State University. Motivated by her brother Toñito’s special needs, she is studying to become a Speech Language Pathologist. Antonio proudly opened Armadillo’s Mexican restaurant on St. Helena’s Main Street in 1991, a dream his extended family shared and worked hard to accomplish, and that they kept going until it was closed 2014 because he realized he needed a work balance that allowed him to be more present with his family. Now, the pandemic has been a challenging time for them, as it has been for most of us, but the economic impact left them unprepared to recover from this disaster.
This is a hardworking and loving family who has always been there to help others in need. Karina Velazquez has been my best friend for fourteen years, and our families have always been close. We have witnessed firsthand their big hearts and compassion and would like to help them get back on their feet. They are a part of our St. Helena community, all four kids attended SHUSD schools and the Velazquez have built their lives in this town.
Although they have home insurance, their deductibles are high and have immediate needs and are unsure how much it would help. We have a goal of $10k to help them find their footing as they navigate recovery. I know this is a lot to ask during these difficult times that we are all experiencing as a community, but any support you can provide is appreciated, including sharing this post. Al amanecer del lunes 28 de septiembre, trágicamente perdieron su hogar y la mayoría de sus pertenencias en Glass Fire que todavía está devastando el condado de Napa.
La policía local les dijo que evacuaran porque los incendios se acercaban rápidamente. Catalina, su hija Julieta y su hijo Toñito salieron corriendo de la casa con solo cuatro cambios de ropa, toallas, cobijas y sus mochilas escolares. Lamentablemente, se olvidaron del sistema de comunicación por intercambio de imágenes (PECS) de Toñito, una herramienta para ayudar a las personas con autismo no verbal a comunicar sus deseos y necesidades básicos. Antonio y su hijo Diego se quedaron atrás para intentar salvar su casa, pero pronto se dieron cuenta de que estaban en peligro inminente.
