Our Story: On the Brink of Homelessness
My husband and I moved in with my dad last year, hoping to catch our breath financially. When we first arrived, we asked if we could stay rent-free for a couple of months—just long enough to get back on our feet and pay down our bills, loans, and credit cards. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. By March, my dad began charging us $800 a month in rent, which we’ve struggled to pay ever since.
Even with that rent, we’ve still had to cover our own food, car payments, insurance, and phone bills. Every month has been a battle just to stay afloat. We haven’t been able to save anything, and we’re still behind on many of our debts.
Now, things have taken a turn for the worse. My dad is going through a divorce and is moving out of the house we’ve been living in. He’s downsizing to a two-bedroom apartment for himself and my sister—leaving my husband, our two dogs, and me with nowhere to go. We recently paid him $150 to help cover the cost of a shared storage unit, but that’s all we could manage.
We were originally told we had until the 31st to move out, but he just changed the date to the 26th. That gives us less than three weeks to figure out where to go. If we can’t raise enough money for a hotel room, we’ll be forced to live in our car. As of now, we’re officially facing homelessness.
We’re asking for help—not just to avoid sleeping in our car, but to have a chance to rebuild. Any support you can offer would mean the world to us.
