Support 100 Day Funeral Costs for Veasna's Dad

Donation protected
Veasna's father Seth Nol passed away unexpectedly at home in Phum Tuol Chamka, Steung near Kampong Cham, Cambodia at the age of 73, on the 1st June 2020.

Veasna was very close to his father who he loved dearly and being stuck in Ireland, it was incredibly difficult to be so far from home at this time. Circumstances were such that traveling back to Cambodia were, and remain, practically impossible. Having lost another close young family member to a tragic accident earlier in the year, on top of personal illness amongst the virus pandemic this has been the culmination of a very difficult year.

Unfortunately the Covid-19 situation and the response to it has proved particularly devastating economically for many in Cambodia as it has across the world, and the family that have relied on money from farming as do many Cambodians, have struggled to adapt as the value of crops crashed.

Under these circumstances, and because we can't be present in person, we've promised to help support the financial burden of funeral expenses for Veasna's father. Having been very stretched financially ourselves by the impact of the virus on our business in Dublin, Ireland we are reluctantly reaching out to friends and family in case others are able to assist. We know it's a hard time for everyone right now but if you can help at all, however small the donation, it is very much appreciated. Any of you with Cambodian connections will know already how important this ceremony is.

A word about Cambodian funerals: In the Cambodian buddhist tradition there are several important funeral rituals and services. Perhaps most important funeral service takes place at 100 days from death, which (put very simply) in the Cambodian buddhist tradition, represents the release of the spirit from the current earthly realm on to its next journey. Family, friends and neighbours gather together to show their support and love for the deceased – to be together all day, eating and talking and praying with the attendance of monks. This is thought to help encourage a good and positive journey to the potential 'next life'. These services are very important and well attended events and it's very important to families to honour their lost loved ones by organising the funeral rituals correctly.

Seth Nol was a wonderful, kind, intelligent and independently thinking man who saw a great deal and experienced great change and struggle in his life. He was greatly respected and loved within the local community by friends, family and neighbours alike. His death at 73 has been sorely felt by his children, grandchildren and those that knew him. Any help offered to pay tribute and give him the send off he richly deserved would be so deeply appreciated by us.

I, Veasna's partner Niall, have setup this page and will be organising for any money collected here to be sent on in its entirety to the family in Cambodia. Any extra funds will help support the family and any shortfall needed will be covered by us. The funeral is scheduled for the beginning of September 2020 so the end of August is the deadline for this fundraising and this page will be closed then.
