Dozer’s Leg Amputation

Almost four years ago, I rescued Dozer from the shelter. He had what the shelter referred to as a “club foot” and they were under the impression that this was a condition he was born with. After multiple vet visits and an X-ray, the vet believes that this is actually the result of an accident (they believe he most likely was hit by a car). The vet found bone fragments in his foot and suggested that he has nerve damage around the area. His foot lacks the regular protective padding that a typical paw pad has so for the last 4 years Dozer has had to wear a boot on that foot when we go outside to prevent injury. Due to the absence of the protective paw padding, this has left the foot vulnerable to injury and occasionally the skin will break and form an open wound. Being in such a touch spot, it has been very difficult for the wounds to heal and has lead to multiple infections over the years. Dozer has been such a good sport throughout all this time between the hospital visits, medication, wound wraps and waiting for mom to put on his boot before going outside every time. Unfortunately, this time when another open wound formed, the infection opened up the wound so large that it cannot heal without surgical intervention. We have consulted with multiple veterinarian specialists and surgeons and all of them have recommended amputation being his best option for treatment moving forwards. I have come to the very difficult decision based on veterinarian recommendations and my own experience to move forwards and schedule his amputation surgery.
I am reaching out to ask for support as this procedure is unfortunately very expensive. The estimate from the veterinarian hospital came out to be between $5194-$6065, including pre/post operative care. His surgery is scheduled for this Monday 10/23. Thank you so much for any donations for the procedure as well as emotional support for Dozer ❤️
