Hi! My name is Lu Valena, and I'm the executive director of Bait/Switch Magazine.

Bait/Switch is an interdisciplinary call-and-response magazine that celebrates the creative process through art telephone. We invite visual artists, musicians, writers, chefs, choreographers, fashion designers, and any other type of creative person to create new work based on a prompt, and then we interview them about their creative process. We publish the results quarterly in a beautiful magazine. Creative people from all over the world, from every walk of life and stage of career have participated in Bait/Switch. Although there are certainly other projects that use art telephone to create collaborative work, to our knowledge, Bait/Switch is the only quarterly publication that does this.

We started Bait/Switch five years ago, and have been operating as a fully self-funded labor of love ever since. We feel ready to take this project to the next level. That means two things: 1) we plan to switch from printing the magazine on-demand to printing in batches and selling directly, which would allow us to give a free copy to each of the contributing artists, and also would allow us to sell the magazine to stockists, and 2) we plan to reorganize the project as a non-profit, which would mean we could apply for grants, which would allow us to expand this project in some very exciting ways.

Bait/Switch means so much to me, as well as to my collaborators Cody VanWinkle, Jordyn Bonds, and the hundreds of artists who have created work for this publication. We are so proud of everything we have accomplished up to this point and are so excited to see what happens next.

We are seeking $1K to help cover the costs of our nonprofit filing fees, and fund the printing of our first batch of magazines.
