Hello, my name is Brett Johnson. I am a quadriplegic from the Camano Island area. I grew up in Kirkland, WA and spent my career as a Builder. I enjoyed spending my extra time outdoors fishing and hunting, living a very active lifestyle. I had just finished working on the Huskies Stadium in Seattle, WA and was to start working on the 520 bridge project the following monday. On July 21st, 2013 (Sunday night) I was involved in a motorcycle accident involving a gate which had been put in without permits or reflectors. After visiting with my friend, I was heading out of the community. Unbeknownst to me, the gate had been closed. Unfortunately for me, it was a black wrought iron gate, and it was approaching dark, so I did not see the gate until it was too late. I did not hit the gate at high speed, but the angle at which my helmet struck, my neck was broken and I was left paralyzed.
As with anyone who has been in a major accident, life is quite a rollercoaster following the incident. For the past two years I have been trying learn how to live a functional life again, as independant as possible but without a way to work for myself, money is now always and issue for me. I met a caregiver on a website for dating for seniors 50 and over. After being in an out of many nursing homes where I experienced very low grade treatment, I was very desperate to change my living situation. She brought me into her home and coaxed me into giving her power of attourney. Soon after, things started to change. She emptied my Social Security Acct. and started selling my tools which were to be given to me son. I now owe Social Security $7,000 and I am out many power tools, as well as my 21.5' Timberline trailor.
So it was back to a nursing home for me (Josephine nursing home in Camano Island, WA) and I am in the process of getting restitution for my belongings as well as $ pulled out of my Social Security Acct. One of the nurses was kind enough to bring me into her home and become my full time caregiver. Life is on its way to balancing out for me but we have one major issue. Her car has broken down, we put $700 into her fuel pump, but now it will not start. I have been stuck at home as I have no way to travel. She drives to the store for groceries and all of our necessities. Without any transportation to name, we are stuck at home and my son has been helping us with getting groceries. What I am asking for is $7,000 for a wheelchair accesible van as I have not been able to leave my home and the nursing homes before, for over two years. I am hoping for a miracle here, so we can have not only a way to get our necessities, but a chance for me to be able to travel as well. I would love to have the opportunity to go camping and car rides through Deception Pass. Quality of life is so important, and this would really be the ticket for us.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. I truly appriciate any help given. This will be a much need asset to my life, as well as my caregiver Susan.
