This past Sunday, Katie fell on cement stairs and sustained a significant spinal cord injury. She was rushed to the hospital and put on a ventilator for a few days as she was struggling to breathe independently. At this time we are thrilled that she is able to breathe on her own and is alert and talking. However she did sustain a significant injury on her C4 vertebrae and a bruised spine. While she is starting to move her arms, she does not have any sensation or mobility from the chest down and we are not anticipating that she will ever regain this.

My mom is a fighter. She is in good spirits and is hopeful for the future. However her life is going to look very different after this. There are so many changes and costs associated with her medical care and all of the adaptations that will be required for life in a wheelchair. One of the big expenses that we will have coming up is a wheelchair accessible van. This will be necessary not only for her to fully engage with life, but to make it to all of her medical appointments. Based on what we are finding, a used, wheel chair accessible van will likely cost $10,000-$15,000. Asking for help is hard, but we need it right now. This van is a very small piece of the expenses that we will have coming up, but will play a huge role in enhancing her quality of life.
