UPDATE 12/19/15 More details from Vet visit: In looking at the only x-ray, Dr H does not believe she has a diaphragmatic hernia, he believes she has PRAA. She has an appointment with an internist on the 28th unless there is a cancellation this Monday. She will get new xrays and an ultrasound of her diaphragm to make sure it is intact. She has a good prognosis for a successful surgery pending the new tests. He wouldn't discuss price as we don't know what we are dealing with, so for now we are in a holding pattern. He did say she was very skinny 11 lbs at 3 1/2 months.
PRAA is a stricture at the bottom of the esophagus which prevents food from moving into the stomach and deprives her of nutrition. "During development in the uterus, the fetus has a right and left aortic arch. Normally the left aortic arch forms the main artery that extends off the heart and travels to the abdominal region. If the right aortic arch develops into the aorta, the esophagus becomes trapped by a ligament that extends from the pulmonary artery (vessel that pumps blood to the lungs) and the aorta."
I have a wonderful friend Becky Speth, whose husband is going to build her a Baily chair so gravity will help the food move down into the stomach. I need to get high calories into her so any suggestion would be welcomed. I plan on getting Dyne supplement to help but she needs to eat a totally liquid diet and use the Baily chair.
UPDATE: 12/14/15 Puppy "Jess" has been picked up from the vet in New York and is on her way to Pennsylvania. The x-rays reveal that her stomach is entirely in her chest cavity and it is unknown if it has become attached or is still free floating. Until the surgeon actually opens her up and assesses the situation, there is no way to predict the outcome of the surgery. She is also extremely underweight, "just a bag of bones". Please keep puppy "Jess" in your thoughts and prayers. Over 700 people have viewed her Go Fund Me page and 72 have found it in their hearts to make donations to give this pup a chance to live. Her story has been shared 311 times. Blessings to each and every one of you!
This Shiloh Shepherd, know known as "Jess" was born with a peritoneal-pericardial diaphragmatic hernia. Her stomach is up by her heart and lungs and not in the abdominal cavity where it belongs. She is in need of immediate surgery to move her stomach back into the abdominal cavity and repair the hernia. The ISSDC is sponsoring this fundraiser. Her surgery is scheduled for next Friday and she has a foster home lined up to keep her during her recovery.
This pup has been already been in several homes in her short 12 to 14 week life. Her breeder and exact birthdate is unknown at this time.
It is our hope that the Shiloh community and their friends will come together to give this little lady the chance she needs to live a full life.
