Dear friends,
One of us, one of our friends, is suffering from metastatic NSCLC. Vincenzo (Enzo) Cerundolo, the Director of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Human Immunology Unit at the University of Oxford, at the John Radcliffe Hospital and a Professor of Immunology at the University of Oxford was diagnosed with stage IV NSCLC out of the blue 18 months ago.
Enzo is a scientific star for his discoveries in processing and presentation of cancer and viral peptides to T cells and lipids to invariant NKT cells.
Apart from his great scientific work (he is still publishing!), Enzo is a fantastic and warm human being, and a very dear friend.
What we are doing now is with Enzo’s consent. Between his physicians in London, Oxford, Southampton, including Chris Abbosh, Charlie Swanton, Mark Middleton and Christian Ottensmeier, as well as Solange Peters – his treating physician located in Switzerland and myself (John Haanen), we are trying to give Enzo what we think are the best treatment options for his dismal disease.
By doing so we have been and are again running into situations, where some treatments are not (yet) reimbursed in the UK, but can possibly be given in Lausanne or elsewhere. Enzo has been traveling to Lausanne all together already for quite some times to receive the best treatment we can think of. He has had already several lines, including experimental therapies (IMpower 150 regimen, IO combos, vaccines, currently Keynote 189 regimen).
However, and inevitably, his financial reserves are rapidly evaporating because of this. Despite all the help so far, especially from Solange, who has been a real wizard in organizing free of charge treatments and has been very generous in sharing her oncology service in Lausanne, we have decided in order for Enzo to keep on receiving his expensive IO and other treatments, that we need to start organizing an “Enzo Support Fund”. Enzo’s disease is progressive, and T-cell therapy is to be envisaged.
It is for this reason that we call upon your generosity! We may have to embark on fundraising dinners, sports events, and more in the future, but we would like to start with some “friendfunding”. Maybe the honorariums of one or two too long advisory boards?
What happens to Enzo could happen to all of us - never-smoker stage IV NSCLC! We still believe that our community can act like a family for its member, any time, anyhow and anywhere. Therefore, we started a GoFundMe campaign, called “VC (Enzo) Support Fund”. You will get an invitation to donate (can be done by credit card).
