VBS 2020 - Mission Outreach

Donation protected
Welcome islanders to this year's "donation box"! As you all know, each year, we ask you guys to do chores in order to help raise money for a missions organization that our church supports. This year, we are raising money for La Casa de la Esperanza, an orphanage in Tijuana Mexico.

For the past 9 years, HFFBC has sent a team down to La Casa with the intent of serving them however they need it. In the past, we have done various service projects from building a protective wall to painting benches. However, the most important way that we serve them is by sharing the love of Jesus with the kids there. While this takes shape in many different ways, the main way that we share the gospel with them is through the VBS program that the team coordinates during their time in Tijuana. Each day, all the kids at the orphanage gather for about an hour for some singing, silly skits, crafts, games, and a Bible lesson. In fact, what the kids at Casa do for their VBS is very similar to what you all are doing this week! Year after year, our relationship with Casa has grown stronger and stronger, and this year, we want to invite you to participate as well.

So, what does this money go to? In the past, we have raised money for La Casa to buy specific items, for instance a few years ago we helped them buy a new oven. However, this year, since La Casa de la Esperanza primarily operates on donations and volunteers (they do have a handful of full time workers--"doñas" they call them), the lockdown in Mexico has affected them significantly. All their donations have receded (food, clothes, school supplies, etc.) and volunteer groups can no longer come in to help. Consequently, the orphanage carries a lot of debt from the current circumstances. So, this money will go to help offset those costs.

So what can you islanders do to help? Glad you asked! Just like always, we want you guys to continue to do chores to earn money to help the orphanage out! One unique thing about Casa is that each of the kids there has chores that they do every day in order to help the orphanage function. If you want some ideas for "Casa themed chores", here is a list of things that the kids do every day:

- sweep the dust off the sidewalks (you could sweep out the garage, maybe?)
- pick up the trash around the orphanage
- clean the bathrooms
- clean their dorms
- help make meals
- clean up after dinner
- wash dishes

The list goes on and on...

Well, islanders, that's about it for the "donation box". Find out more about Casa this week by tuning in to Missions Moment every day where you'll get to hear from actual people who have been to Casa before! And especially tune in on Day 5 to hear from the special guest, you definitely won't want to miss it! In the meantime, here are a few pictures from past trips to Casa for you to enjoy :)

^the view out the door of Casa Cuna, the place where the team from HFFBC stays. The blue building is the main gathering space where the kitchen and dining area are and where VBS takes place.

^view of most of the compound. The green building is the office building, the purple building is the girls dorm, the teal building in the way back is the bath house, and the blue building is the kitchen/gathering area. Off to the left, behind the green building is the boys dorm and on the far left (off screen) is the homework room, workshop, and storage rooms.

^Casa is located in a valley. On the hillsides surrounding the orphanage are these neighborhoods. They are pretty rundown, and in this photo, you can see smoke from a burning pile of trash.
