My name is Kelly Durr. I am 29 years old, and currently living in Duluth Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. When I first came to the Shaolin Institute to begin studying tai chi it was mostly out of curiosity. I was looking for a way to calm my mind, improve my life, and pursue wellness. I had read about the benefits of mediation and martial arts and it had always intrigued me. When I decided to make a commitment to practice tai chi, I had no idea how much it would change my life. Through practicing tai chi, chi gong, and eventually kung Fu, I have learned a lot about the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of these martial arts. Through moving meditation I have developed a mind body connection that had freed me from anxiety and stress that at one time plagued me. The mindfulness I now have in my life has brought about a profound sense of peace and stability. I have developed self -disciple, confidence, and a sense of purpose that I have never experienced before. The philosophy and principles I have learned keep me striving for self- improvement and empowerment everyday.
Through my commitment and dedication to the Shaolin Institute where I study, I eventually began to work for the school and became a leadership student. I dedicate much of my time to helping to improve the school so that it can continue to provide its students with a place to learn and grow. I am to constantly expanding my mind with knowledge to help others to discover the peace and wellness I have gained practicing tai chi and kung Fu.
In order to expand my understanding of these ancient practices, I have been invited to visit China with my Shifu, the headmaster of the Shaolin Institute. Students from the United States and China will be participating in the Shaolin World Federation Multicultural Education Project. We will be visit locations such as the Great Wall and the Shaolin Temple, where my Shifu lived and trained. Also we will be visiting Chinese hospitals, universities, art centers, and clinics to meet with some internationally renewed doctors of Chinese medicine and healing arts. This trip will be an invaluable experience aimed at not only expanding knowledge and love of martial arts, but also centering my mind and soul with eastern culture and ideas. A documentary of the trip will be filmed during the two- week adventure to capture the young Americans and Chinese living, training, and resolving differences during their journey.
Please help me in my efforts to follow my passion and visit China for this once in a lifetime opportunity. A donation for my trip can be made to the Shaolin Chan Foundation. This trip will be presented as an outreach of the Shaolin Chan Foundation, Inc. with the mission of multi-cultural education and furthering understanding, communication and cooperation through the traditional Shaolin principles of compassion, loyalty, integrity, high moral code, honesty, modesty, courtesy and indomitable shaolin spirit, as well as, spreading the knowledge of internal and external martial arts, healing arts, nutrition, and philosophy as they had been known in the ancient Shaolin Temple before the events of the modern era. Please help me reach my goals so I can continue to follow this newfound way of life.
