This campaign is to support the Vaughan family after the loss of Richard Vaughan, a beloved husband and father. However, the heartbreaking story of this family started long before this tragic incident. After being injured on the job about 8 years ago, Richard was completely unable to work. In 2012, Richard endured a massive heart attack which left him with only 40% of his heart function. As if this was not enough for one family to bear, more was yet to come. Richard’s wife, Sarah was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer in 2013 which had already spread to her lungs when discovered and later to her brain. Since her diagnosis, Sarah has had to quit her much-loved job teaching, undergo treatment after treatment, and often has to stay home from events she’d otherwise enjoy if not for the risk of becoming ill. During the time between Sarah’s diagnosis and his death, Richard cared for Sarah in ways every woman dreams her husband would if in the same position. I remember once reading a post by Sarah on a morning she was getting ready to leave for another treatment; she had walked into the next room to find Richard warming her coat by the heater. It was all the small sweet things like this that proved Richard to be such a great, caring and selfless man. On Friday, May 15th Richard had a stroke and was Life-Flighted to Duke. On Monday, May 18th he passed away. He was only 53. Richard and Sarah have two kids, Brooke and Clint whom are both only teenagers. The day after his stroke, Brooke was supposed to dance in her final recital with her Daddy watching. In less than two weeks she’ll graduate high school. Clint’s almost driving, but won’t have his Daddy there to see him finally get his license. There are so many things these kids will wish their Dad could be there with them for. Sarah is a wonderful mother but can’t possibly support two kids on her own without the ability to even work. Everyone knows medical bills are completely ridiculous and as friends, family, or even complete strangers to Richard and Sarah we need to step up and help out a family that already has too much on their plate.
