Vashti: A new kind of Jewish media

Vashti launched a year ago at what now feels like an impossibly innocent time. In the twelve months since then, an election has exposed the fault lines in our understanding of antiracism; a global movement for Black lives, set in motion by the murder of George Floyd, has cracked them open once more. We've watched in horror as our communal institutions dodged annexation, and as migrant dinghies slid into the Channel. We've watched legacy Jewish media die, only to be resurrected by a shadowy consortium. A pandemic has mobilised and immobilised us.

Yet this upheaval has also been constructive. Political polarisation has consolidated a self-identifying “Jewish left”, and clarified the need for radical solidarity over narrow self-interest. Jews marginalised by our communal institutions have found each other, and done some cool shit.

The project of a new left-wing Jewish media has been gestating for a long time. It took an election to induce its birth, but it’s since grown into something far bigger than party politics. What we are building here is not only an outlet that documents and dissects the Jewish left, but a space in which it might develop, where Jewish leftists can think without fear, and find community.

The community is Vashti’s lifeblood. We have no big backers (although if you’re watching this, George Soros, our DMs are open) – we have you. People who want a new kind of Jewish media, and are willing to pay for it.

We've been humbled by the generous donations we've received, which have enable us to do a lot: to make videos with Michael Rosen, to publish some of our favourite writers , interview some of our favourite people and get together to chat about some of our favourite Netflix shows.

But we’re going to need your continued support to ensure Vashti isn’t just a one-year flash in the pan.

We need £10,000 to fund our running costs for the next year. That will pay for:

➡️ writers
➡️ illustrators
➡️ videographers
➡️ recording equipment
➡️ graphic & web designers
➡️ social media promotion

We want a new Jewish media – help us create one.
