Aloha Family and Friends,

My mother, Erlene Edayan (Pi’ilani) was born January 23rd, 1981 and passed on August 19th, 2021 at the Queens Medical Center in Honolulu due to covid-19 pneumonia. I am her oldest daughter (19). My name is Pomaika’i Mahoney and I’m speaking on behalf of myself, my 6 sisters and 1 brother.

Sunday, August 8th, my mom got tested at the airport and received her results the same day, it came back positive. She was admitted to the Kaiser Medical Center two days after having a hard time to breathe, later that night was sent back home with Ibuprofen. She had no appetite. On the 14th, she had told me that she was spitting up blood and that her lungs were sore and she was admitted to Queens Medical Center where she had a cardiac arrest in the ER, they put her on a ventilator to help pump oxygen into her body, she was in “Induced coma”. August 16th, we had a decision between ending my mama’s life meaning take her off the ventilator because her oxygen was already so low and the doctors already had her on the strongest dose of antibiotics or we could keep her on the ventilator but if she were to go into another cardiac arrest, they can’t do anything. Our choice was to keep her on the ventilator in hopes of our mom fighting this virus. She’s a fighter and she was battling this sickness.

My grandma and I went to the Queen Medical Center and they were not allowing any visitors to see my mom, no family, vaccinated or not unless we made the decision to take my mom off the ventilator which we were not going to do. My grandma and I were told that only two visitors are allowed in the room for 30 minutes only if we made the decision to take her off the machines which we did not. Her vitals were good but it was her lungs that got attacked. The only contact we had with my mom were video calls through Webex. My mom was on that ventilator for 5 days and pronounced dead at 2:30am August 19th. My grandma and I got to see my mother, no one else. She was our rock, our protector, our home, our heart, mind and soul! All of this happened so fast and unexpectedly.
