Support U.S. Figure Skater Ivan (Vanya) Desyatov’s Defense Fund
Hi, I am fundraising for U.S. figure skater and athlete Ivan (Vanya) Desyatov, who has been suspended from his sport due to an allegation made by a former adult peer. For five months, he has been unable to defend himself, train, or compete while awaiting his opportunity to be heard in an ongoing investigation.
Why Your Support Matters:
• Legal & Administrative Costs: Hiring legal representation is expensive, and SafeSport imposes administrative fees ranging from $3,000 to $8,000 just to complete hearings and appeals.
• Loss of Training & Income: Vanya was suspended just before the competitive season after months of preparation. Unlike professional athletes with unions, amateur athletes depend on sponsorships and fundraising to sustain their training.
• A Challenging Journey: Vanya, a young immigrant who lost both parents in his early teens, has worked tirelessly to overcome challenges. Now, he is working multiple jobs just to cover his defense costs.
SafeSport investigations do not grant amateur athletes due process rights. Unlike professionals and even those accused of doping, amateur athletes can be suspended without the chance to present evidence or defend themselves.
How You Can Help:
Vanya is doing everything he can to fight for his career, but he needs support to cover the mounting legal and administrative costs. Your donation will help him afford his defense, keep training, and fight for fair treatment of all amateur athletes.
Thank you for supporting Vanya in this difficult and uncertain time. Every contribution helps him move one step closer to justice and returning to the sport he loves.
