This is something I’ve been toying with the idea of for quite some time now, for fear of how it could possibly be perceived. I’d like to think of myself as a caring and generous person but as much as I hate to admit it, it matters to me what people think and I’d hate to be perceived as some right fighting do-gooder who forces their thoughts and opinions down people’s throats.

That being said, to hell with it, I find myself with an hour to myself without distraction and I’m deciding to spend it throwing a thought, an idea, dare I say it, plea out there into the sea of wonderful family, friends, acquaintances and professional networks that I’m so lucky to be surrounded by to see what happens.

As many of you know, I’m fortunate to have 3 incredible children including my adopted son Harvey from Vanuatu who is the absolute light of my life. Chris and I came to meet Harvey and his family when he was 4 weeks old and have been so lucky to have afforded him the opportunity of a life that most Nivans could only ever dream of. I have an incredible relationship with Harvey’s biological mum (Aunty) Eva and his half brothers Junior and Nino and I speak to them at least once if not twice or three times a week, a bond I will forever cherish.

Vanuatu, while as magical as it is, is a 3rd world country where education, like most things we consider essential, is a privilege. With the MAXIMUM wage in Vanuatu being in the equivalent of approx $17 (AUD) per DAY and the cost of living SO high, it’s a luxury that many,if not most, can’t afford. When children are sent to school, often one child attends at a time, per term throughout the year to ensure each child gets an opportunity to learn basic maths and reading/ writing skills.

Upon learning this, Chris and I decided to act and offered to cover the costs of Harvey’s two half brothers to attend school for the year. When I told Eva of our intention, she cried, near wept tears of happiness and such overwhelming gratitude, it was as if I’d told her she had won lotto! Just to put it into perspective, thats 100% of 3 weeks household earnings to send one child to school!

I received pictures and a copy of the boys report cards yesterday which bought me such an overwhelming sense of joy and pride which prompted me to do this. Chris and I intend on sending Junior and Nino to school again next year, and forever if we can. I want to do my everything to break the cycle of poverty for this family and give them every possible opportunity that so many don’t have... and then this little voice in the back of my head says ‘but what if we could do more...?’ What if more people knew and wanted to play a part??

By no means am I in any way affiliated with any charities or charitable organisations or am I any kind of registered charity or professing to be any kind of philanthropist myself. There are much more inspirational people walking the earth making a heck of a lot more difference than I could ever dream of but it just makes sense to DO something. The entire cost of sending each of the boys to school for a year is roughly $250. This includes school fees, uniform, socks, shoes, school bag, lunch box, water bottle, books and equipment (if I shop thrifty).

Chris and I are fortunate enough to be heading to Vanuatu again at Christmas time this year. I intend to take with me everything the boys need in preparation for school next year and to arrange payment of their fees while we’re there. What I would love, more than anything else in the world is to send at least one more child to school next year....This is where u come in.

If you are interested in this plight, would like to play a part in something so life changing, please hit me up. I don’t for one second think anyone has a loose $250 rolling around, at least this close to Xmas and at relatively short notice BUT a few contributions will soon add up. Please, no obligation for the full $250, a small contribution is just fine!

I'm doing this for Junior and Nino, for as many kids as I can. I will be fighting the hoards of manic xmas shoppers in an attempt to stock up on exercise books, pencils, pencil cases, school bags, glue sticks, socks, shoes, rulers, erasers etc before we leave on Boxing Day, I'd love to be stuffing my suitcases full of supplies for as many kids as possible!!

I will endeavor to provide as much information as possible about the school/ families/ children impacted but can't guarantee as I'm really throwing this all together at the 11th hour in the lead up to xmas with birthdays, school graduations, work and life in between.
