Just before memorial day, our dad Scott VanHorn started feeling sick with what we thought was the flu. After being seen in the emergency room, he was told that his platelets and hemoglobin was so low that he needed be transferred to Borgess hospital. After a month of tests, biopsies, bags of blood and platelets, and hours at the hospital, my dad was diagnosed with MDS, a rare bone marrow cancer. Once they found a treatment plan, consisting of chemo treatments, daily transfusions, and an eventual bone marrow transplant, our Dad was able to come home. However, this meant he would need round the clock care, and our mother Vickie would take time off work to help him with the kids. After a week of being at home, he spiked fevers of 103 and had to be transferred back to the hospital. They then said his lungs weren’t working correctly and he would have to be put on a ventilator and moved to the ICU. They still were not sure why his lungs weren’t working, despite weeks of tests and he was not recovering despite treatment. On Monday July 13th, a group of doctors told our mother that they had exhausted their efforts and there was nothing more they could do. We didn’t give up hope, and believed God could heal him, and so we had him moved to the UofM hospital in Ann Arbor by ambulance Tuesday July 14th, where he is currently in critical care. The doctors at UofM are wonderful and continually testing him for answers, while offering the best care for our family. However, we have to stay in a hotel in Ann Arbor and pay for food and gas and the medical bills keep rolling in. Neither of our parents are able to work at this time and things are getting expensive. We ask that those who are friends and family and would like to help with expenses would please donate. All funds will go to hotel stays, food, and gas and all excess will directly go to medical bills. We trust that God has a plan for our Dad and will take care of our family, and we thank those in the community who would like to help.
Love,
Scott, Vickie, Cameron, Courtney, and Abby VanHorn
