Vangie Shaw Memorial Chess Table at Sabin School

In the summer of 2017 the Sabin School community lost a beloved teacher, treasured friend, talented colleague, devoted coach and fierce advocate. Vangie Shaw made Sabin better in countless ways. Her legacy shines on endlessly in the hearts and minds of her students, and everyone who knew and loved her, but we are working to honor her and her many gifts with a permanent reminder on the Sabin campus.
A custom designed and hand-crafted outdoor chess table will be permanently installed on the South Playground, adjacent to the native garden. We hope this table will offer a place for our community to reflect and remember Ms. Shaw, and carry on her legacy and commitment to young learners and the world they inhabit. It will carry the same pledge she shared with her students, so that we never forget:
We the students of Ms. Shaw's class do hereby promise to:
Never stop asking question.
Never give up our dreams.
Never lose our sense of joy.
Work hard to create a more beautiful, peaceful planet for ourselves and future generations.
If we surpass our fundraising target, any additional money will be used to beautify the plantings in the garden surrounding the table installation and/or will be donated in support of Chess for Success and their work with young chess players in Portland.
