Our little miracle child Leo is turning 3 years old in a few short months and we are trying to purchase a wheelchair accessible minivan for him. Leo is a very special boy who has been through so much in his short little life. He was born with a very rare chromosomal abnormality. It is so rare that there isn't even a name for it. It's just called unbalanced translocation of chromosomes 7 and 13. Our specialists and even genetics doctor can't find another case with the same translocation.
Leo has faced many challenges since he was born, many of which he is slowly overcoming. Unlike a normal baby, Leo would aspirate and choke on his formula, which would constantly make him very sick. Something as simple as swallowing was not so simple for him. Because of this, at the age of 8 months Leo had to have surgery to insert a feeding tube. Because Leo has a very weak immune system he is often sick. He has been in an out of hospitals more times than we can count. Leo also has low tone in his abdomen and high tone in his shoulders, arms and legs. This limits Leo's ability to move and be active like normal kids his age. Despite his limitations, Leo has come so far. His doctors are amazed with his progress, and we are so grateful to God for all of the miracles in Leo's life. Leo is now working with feeding therapist to start eating more solid foods. In addition to feeding therapy, Leo is in Physical, Occupational and Speech therapies multiple times per week. Some days we are literally in and out of the car all day long, going from one appointment to the next.
Because Leo has a spine curvature we can no longer rely on his stroller. Only a wheelchair can provide the support his spine needs. The right sitting positioning is key to helping his scoliosis and preventing it from getting worse. With all his appointments, we need to be able to transport his wheelchair with ease. Right now Leo's wheelchair is extremely heavy to get in and out of our current car. We are in desperate need of a wheelchair accessible minivan.
