Hello, I’m writing this on behalf of my sister Vanesa. My sister is 19 years old and just had her first baby on February 20th, 2023. Her daughter was born prematurely at 6 months and had to stay in the incubator for 2 months. Her daughter was discharged from the hospital on May 4th and my sister was SO happy to finally be able to be with her baby. But unfortunately, that wasn’t for long because 2 weeks later my sister was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer, Stage 3.

How it all started:

After Vanesa had her 6-week postpartum checkup to make sure her incision was healing okay she began to feel very sick, she was feeling nauseous, bloated, fatigued, and throwing up every day and she could not keep anything down. She made an appointment with her primary doctor, and they did an ultrasound where they found abnormal masses and that same day scheduled her for a CT scan. When she had the CT scan done, they found a large mass measuring 15.4cm x 9cm x 16.1cm, a hernia, and other small masses that were spreading, and she also had a huge amount of fluid building up. She was showing signs of Ovarian Cancer and the Dr’s informed her that the chances that she had cancer were very high, but we all prayed and hoped it wasn’t that. On May 16th the Dr. then scheduled her for a biopsy and to have the excess fluid drained. She was sent home after this procedure, and we were waiting for the biopsy results. A few days later she went back to the hospital because the bloating was coming back, and she was still having the same symptoms. The Dr. then scheduled surgery for May 23rd to have the tumor removed and drain more fluid. They ended up also removing her left ovary due to it being cancerous and found that the mass was spreading to her abdominal lining and liver, so they removed as much of the mass as they could see. She spent 4 days in the hospital recovering from this surgery, she was discharged on Saturday May 27 and and is supposed to be starting chemotherapy in about 2 weeks.

Her chemotherapy will be 4 months long and she will be doing 2 sessions a week. We are doing this fundraiser to raise awareness and for support from anyone who can help. The next 4 months are going to be very hard for my sister, I wish she didn’t have to go through this and could just enjoy being a mommy for the first time. If you’d like to support, all proceeds will go to my sister to help her financially as she will not be working while doing her chemo treatments.

Future Plans:

My sister graduated from Reading High School last year. She was working on getting her real estate license but due to everything going on she has put that on hold. However, once she is done with this journey and beats cancer she is going to return to work, get her real estate license and focus on being an amazing mother to her baby!

Hola, escribo esto en nombre de mi hermana Vanesa. Mi hermana tiene 19 años y acaba de tener su primer bebé el 20 de febrero de 2023. Su hija nació prematura a los 6 meses y tuvo que permanecer en la incubadora durante 2 meses. Su hija fue dada de alta del hospital el 4 de mayo y mi hermana estaba TAN feliz de poder finalmente estar con su bebé. Pero desafortunadamente, eso no fue por mucho tiempo porque 2 semanas después, a mi hermana le diagnosticaron cáncer de ovario, etapa 3.

Cómo empezó todo:

Después de que Vanesa se hizo su chequeo posparto a las 6 semanas para asegurarse de que su incisión estaba sanando bien, comenzó a sentirse muy enferma, se sentía con náuseas, hinchada, fatigada y vomitaba todos los días y no podía retener nada. Hizo una cita con su médico de cabecera, le hicieron una ecografía donde encontraron masas anormales y ese mismo día le programaron una tomografía computarizada. Cuando se hizo la tomografía computarizada, encontraron una gran masa que medía 15,4 cm x 9 cm x 16,1 cm, una hernia y otras pequeñas masas que se estaban extendiendo, y también tenía una gran cantidad de líquido acumulándose. Ella estaba mostrando signos de cáncer de ovario y los doctores le informaron que las posibilidades de que tuviera cáncer eran muy altas, pero todos oramos y esperábamos que no fuera eso. El 16 de mayo, el Dr. la programó para una biopsia y para drenar el exceso de líquido. La enviaron a casa después de este procedimiento y estábamos esperando los resultados de la biopsia. Unos días después, volvió al hospital porque la hinchazón estaba regresando y todavía tenía los mismos síntomas. Luego, el Dr. programó la cirugía para el 23 de mayo para extirpar el tumor y drenar más líquido. Terminaron extirpando también su ovario izquierdo debido a que era canceroso y descubrieron que la masa se estaba extendiendo al revestimiento abdominal y al hígado, por lo que extirparon la mayor cantidad de masa que pudieron ver. Pasó 4 días en el hospital recuperándose de esta cirugía, fue dada de alta el sábado 27 de mayo y se supone que comenzará la quimioterapia en aproximadamente 2 semanas.

Su quimioterapia durará 4 meses y estará haciendo 2 sesiones a la semana. Estamos haciendo esta recaudación de fondos para crear conciencia y para el apoyo de cualquier persona que pueda ayudar. Los próximos 4 meses van a ser muy duros para mi hermana, ojalá no tuviera que pasar por esto y pudiera disfrutar de ser mamá por primera vez. Si desea apoyar, todas las ganancias se destinarán a mi hermana para ayudarla económicamente, ya que no trabajará mientras se somete a sus tratamientos de quimioterapia.

Planes futuros:

Mi hermana se graduó de Reading High School el año pasado. Estaba trabajando para obtener su licencia de bienes raíces, pero debido a todo lo que estaba pasando, la puso en espera. Sin embargo, una vez que termine con este viaje y venza al cáncer, volverá a trabajar, obtendrá su licencia de bienes raíces y se concentrará en ser una madre increíble para su bebé.
