In Memory of Matthew Thomas Vander Velde
Matthew left this life for his eternal home on May 31, 2017. His precious, young soul was taken by a tragic accident.
Matthew was born in Reno, Nevada on October 14, 1995. Matthew leaves behind his loving mother, Cynthia Vander Velde, his devoted father Steven Vander Velde, his two brothers Mitchell and Michael, and countless others who loved him. He was close to all of them.
Matthew touched the lives of everyone he met. His mother said, "We all have a piece of Matthew that we will carry in our hearts forever."
It's a fact that he had no "regular" friends, only best friends. He loved life and lived it to the fullest. He was intelligent and quick-witted, always with a story to tell. In fact, no one dared interrupt his stories, because that meant he had to start over from the beginning!
He was a kind, loving, gentle man. He showed affection with ease. His greeting was a big hug. He didn't care if his friends heard him refer to his mother as "Momma."
He was generous and caring. If someone needed help, he would give his last dollar. If he thought that his best friend Brandon's dad could use a little company while Brandon was away at college, he'd drop by and they'd talk for hours. Later, he'd call Brandon to let him know that his dad was doing all right.
On October 10, 2011, four days before his 16th birthday, he wrote on Facebook: "In the end, you'll know which people really love you. They're the ones who see you for who you really are and, no matter what, always find a way to be at your side."
The best we can do now to honor Matthew is to try and be like Matthew.
